Bob, KK6EK, reports: Team and Friends -- If you subscribe to DX Magazine, you probably have received your Jan/Feb 2017 copy, and see that it is a special issue devoted (almost) entirely to VK0EK, the 2016 expedition to Heard Island. We thank the Editor (for 20 years!) Carl N4AA for this honor. As you will see, the six articles cover more than the radio operation; they also describe the spectacular field observations on Heard Island and the infotech we developed and deployed (the other two major parts of the project). I also took the opportunity to opine on the past and future of DXing and DX- peditions. I think the issue will stand as an historical documentary of an historic project, and I again congratulate and thank everyone who had a hand in making it happen. If you do not subscribe to DX Magazine, I will be happy to send you a printed copy (the publisher supplied me with 100). If you have names or radio callsigns of other deserving people, let me know and I?ll send them a copy as well. Just reply and provide me with mailing addresses. [edited] Despite the worst December for decades, propagation wise, Santa's team blew their horns in a big way. With a total of 33,615 QSOs in their books they now salute their 17,062 QSO partners as 2017 kicks off. Yes, indeed USA (NW) was the most difficult path with 2365 QSOs while Japan (NE) was much easier with 3277. Most of the U.S QSOs were remoted from Radio Arcala's (OH8X) mammoth 24 elements array on 20M atop the 350ft. rotating tower. Romanian Lacy, YO6CFB, kept a low profile along the way, but took the podium as world winner with an astonishing 64 band-pointers while con- tacting all twelve elves. Not far behind were Ralf, DL3ZZ (61) and Wolf- gang, DL4FCS (60). North America was a real tight horse race with ARRL?s Vice President (Hon) John Kannode, N4MM, leading the pack to the final corner only to see Canadian Pierre, VA2CZ, taking the honors (16) with a higher 20M CW/SSB count along with his 160m success. Joergen/VK2KJJ, Val/PY2XU, Manuel/EA8DO and Sergei/RV9DC were the winners of their respective continents. ARRL President, Tom Gallagher, NY2RF, saluted the Santa Team for making a special effort towards the youngsters of the families with their QRZ.com personalized audio & video streaming. And so, Santa is now joining the OH-ranks for their 100th Year of Independence Centennial where it is not only Santa who would sign Old Father (OF), but the entire nation is now getting started with their OF-festivities. Happy New Year, Martti, OH2BH, on behalf of entire OF9X Santa Radio Team See the results at: https://www.qrz.com/db/OF9X SILENT KEY. As editor of the OPDX and President of the Northern Ohio DX Association (NODXA), I (Tedd/KB8NW) am sad to report that NODXA has unexpectedly lost one of our members on January 2nd. Karl E. Karl was an avid DXer with 350 DXCC entities on CW, an IOTA chaser, enjoyed race cars, was actively involved with the Cleveland Zoo and the American Philatelic Society. The chief topic of discussion was development of masts and antenna support hardware able to with- stand the winds and weather of Bouvet. The HF antennas and EME arrays need to be at a height where they can be effective and yet able to withstand the harsh conditions of Bouvet. Working drawings were de- veloped and the engineers at DX Engineering are now developing proto- types for testing. The group also considered how products developed for Bouvet might also serve unique needs of other radio amateurs. Visit the following Web page to see pictures of the meeting: http://www.bouvetdx.org/news-and-updates * A Message From the DXpedition Team -- Our Commitment to You -- A DXpedition to Bouvet is not to be taken lightly. Bouvet is a serious and dangerous place; demanding attention to safety, serious planning, physical and mental endurance, time to allow for storms and rough seas, and a team with the right balance of size, experience, talent, emotional stability, and sense of purpose. We feel we have met these criteria, but when we arrive at Bouvet we also need to attend to our obligations to you, our financial supporters and DX audience. How we meet those obligations and expectations will define us as a team. It is our belief that, given the rarity of this entity, we must pull out all the stops. We must utilize maximum legal power, the best antennas, world class transceivers, propagation studies, the best location on the island, a safe vessel and crew, highly qualified helicopter pilots, and the complimentary resources of our team. We will need near real time information flowing to us through our ex- tensive pilot system so that we can maximize our primary purpose ? providing QSO?s. We have a conscience. We will not do this just for the sake of doing it and end up using a compromised location, less than 24/7 coverage of all open bands, limited power, inefficient antennas, and insufficient time at the island. We want to do this right and give everyone the best possible chance of making the QSO?s they desire, be they on 160, the WARC bands, SSB, CW, RTTY, or 6 and 2 meter EME. Rest assured that we will do our very best for you! No shortcuts or compromises! ..... The 3Y0Z Bouvet Island DXpedition Team * Also, watch an interview by Jim Mornar, N9TK, with Tim Duffy, K3LR, at DX Engineering on January 11, 2017 in Tallmadge, Ohio. Jim Mornar, N9TK, is one of the team members that will be activating Bouvet Island as 3Y0Z in January 2018. Tom, LA4LN, the Norwegian Radio Relay League (NRRL) HF Traffic Manager, informed OPDX the following in an E-mail: Dear DX friends, There has been some confusion about what amateur radio calls have been licensed for use from the Bouvet Island (2nd Most Wanted DXCC Entity; IOTA AN-002) for the year to come. The Norwegian Communications Authority informs me that the following licenses are valid as of 25 January 2017: 3Y0G Granted to ON4WW, valid from 1 January 2017 to 30 April 2017. 3Y0Z Granted to LA6VM, valid from 1 December 2017 to 30 April 2018. 3Y0H Granted to RA9USU, valid from 1 January 2018 to 28 February 2018. 3Y0I Granted to 3Z9DX, valid from 13 January 2017 to 31 December 2017. EDITOR'S NOTE: So far the 3Y0Z operation is the only DXpedition scheduled to hit the airwaves sometime in early 2018. 5A, LIBYA. OPDX was informed that Abubaker, 5A1AL, has reported the following [edited]: "...the situation here is bad and we still have hope that it will get better but no signs for such a hope till now. Yes, I am still using 5A1AL, but I live in very limited space so my signal is not that good. I am using base loaded vertical antenna so no space for dipoles, beside that I have high level noise and I guess propagation is also not that good. We can try to set up a sked on the bands, of course if we have electricity here. We are suffering from power outage; most times we are without electricity for 8-9 hours/very bad during the cold winter." 5K0, SAN ANDRES (Update).
