All digital operators are invited to participate in the "2016 Digital Mode Most Wanted Survey". Previously known as the "RTTY Most Needed DXCC Entities Survey" in 2002, 2005 and 2011, the name has been changed to reflect current times and to be more in line with the Digital DXCC award. Several entities at the top of the 2011 list have been active recently, so now is a good time to find out what's needed on the digital modes. The survey can be found here: http://survey.hamdocs.com/index.php/468764 Please be sure to read the "How to use the 2016 Digital Mode DX Most Wanted Survey" at the top of the page. The survey will only be available for two weeks and will close at 2359Z on Friday, May 13, 2016. So don't delay, please complete the survey promptly. It is our hope to have the results available before the Dayton Hamvention. It's very important that every digital operator take part in the survey in order to achieve the most accurate results possible. These surveys help DXpedition planners and are of interest to all digital operators. Feel free to forward this invitation to other groups. A new feature has been added to this year's survey. It's now possible to work on the survey, take a break from it and resume it later. You don't have to complete the survey all at one time. There is a button at the very end of the survey that says "Resume Later". Clicking this option will bring you to a page that asks for your name, a password and email address. Email will be sent to you with a link that will bring you back to the survey you were working on. Or you can resume the survey using your password. Thank you for your participation! 73 from the Survey Team: Don AA5AU Ed W0YK Larry K8UT Past survey results can be found here: http://www.aa5au.com/rtty/rtty-most-needed-dxcc-entities CP, BOLIVIA. The Northern California DX Foundation's (NCDXF) 2016 Spring Newsletter is now available online with some great articles on recent DXpeditions at: http://www.ncdxf.org/newsletters/2016-SPRING.pdf P5, NORTH KOREA (P5DX-what could have been...). On April 26th, Paul Ewing, N6PSE, founder of the Intrepid-DX Group , Co-Leader of the January 2016 DXpedition to South Sandwich and South Georgia Islands, posted the following on his Blog page (excerpt): " As a Blogger, my blog represents my thoughts and my views only. The content of this Blog does not represent anyone else but me. This morning, I had to cancel a DXpedition. It was one of the hardest decisions of my life. It was not for lack of permission, it was not for lack of a team and equipment willing to go. The prospect of a P5 activation brings out the worst in this hobby. The posers, the nuts, the ill-informed and the opinionated. But in the end, it mostly came down to a surprising lack of support and lack of funding from some of the world?s paramount DX foundations when asked to fund grants to the world?s #1 Most Wanted Entity." This was just a excerpt/portion of a very long article that Paul wrote about a major DXpedition to P5 that was going to happen in May. Paul states, "After tireless efforts, we finally had a letter of invitation in hand from DPRK authorities inviting us into the country as the first-ever large scale amateur radio event." However, something happened which bought it to an end. "The Daily DX" reports: The ever-persistent Hassan the pirate from Baghdad, Iraq, continues to plague the Amateur Radio bands. This guy has been pirating and bootlegging multiple calls for several years. He has been heard bootlegging the calls YI1HR, YI1H, YI1HRP and YI1HI and pirating the calls YI1BGD, YI1IRQ, YI1DZ and most recently TA7/YI1RZ. Unfortunately in Iraq there does not seem to be any enforce- ment to take Hassan off the air, much less do anything about the sit- uation. Therefore let's get the word out not to work or spot Hassan who operates on 20 Meters SSB, usually around 14178-14188. In fact the best policy is to ignore him completely on the air. Memories of rare DX: It was 1970 -- 46 years ago -- when ZA/OH2BH came on the air for the first Albania DX activation. Some 860 QSOS were made in a serious demonstration as Albania was on the top of all most-wanted lists. That operation led to the first major Albania activation 21 years later -- in 1991 -- as ZA1A, by a large multi-national group. There were also several follow up operations by foreign operators, as well as an operation by ZA1A students, such as Geni, ZA1B, who was the Government liaison for ZA1A. In 2003, a ham radio academic course, the first of its kind, was conducted at the Technical University of Tirana and ZA1UT was established as a club station. At the same time the contesting part of the group activated ZA1A in a multi-multi on the Durres beach and won Europe. Now Martti is returning to that same beach with many fond memories, and he would like to contact some of the original 860 while he is there. Martti will only be on 17/20m. He will also sit down with Geni, ZA1B, to recall and treasure those memorable days. So good days are now coming back. ZD7, ST. HELENA ISLAND (ZD7VDE Postponed). Bill, G0VDE, reports: "I've just received the disappointing news that the opening of St Helena airport has been postponed. Following the recent 'implementation flight' it appears there were issues with turbulence and windshear on approach to the runway from the north. As a result of the data gathered and the conditions ex- perienced, it has been decided that there is some additional work to be done in order to ensure the safe operation of scheduled passenger flights to and from St Helena Airport. More information is available at: http://www.sainthelena.gov.sh/airport-opening-ceremony-postponed/ This is obviously disappointing but safety at a new airport is clearly paramount. DXPEDITION WRAP-UP [edited]: MX0VRC (Virtual ARC) May 2016 Trip to Isle of Lundy by Keith/M0KJA, Mark/G0GQT and Nigel/G0GDA -- It was ?all systems go? from our end - we drove through the night on Sunday 1st May and arrived in Ilfracombe at 08.00am in plenty of time to sail to Lundy Island at 10.00. Having parked the 2 cars outside the Check In Office at the harbor, we were informed that ?due to force 6 winds in the Bristol channel there would be no sailing that day?! The receptionist said that she would try to obtain a substitute form of transport in the form of a helicopter but there was no way all our gear (20 items) would be coming with us. The best she could do was to send the equipment by boat on the Wednesday...!! Great....no equipment no DXpedition. After a lot of begging, pleading and grovelling the three of us and our equipment arrived safely altogether by chopper on Lundy. I cannot praise the ladies enough from the Ilfracombe office for their help. We set up one station and following a great meal at the pub, we managed to get on the air the first evening making around a hundred contacts but having been up for about 40 hours we soon ?hit the hay?. The island runs on generated power which runs from 06.00hrs until midnight so torches are needed for night time toilet visits. Following another MC Eruption the band conditions were so flat that you would need an iron to make them any flatter. On Tuesday we put up the rest of the aerials ? 80m & 40m straight dipoles, 20m sloper, a 9 element tonna and the 2nd vertical dipole which meant that all stations were up and running. We had made choke baluns out of FT240-61 ferrites for fitting aerial end and bought by-pass filters from ML&S where Richard, Tony and Steve had been their usual helpful selves. Someone had switched off 10m,12m 15m and 40m so we had limited bands to work with due apparently to yet another solar flare just for good measure. Mark went on the 2m UKAC contest on Tuesday evening and absolutely smashed it with a score of more than one million points. On 20m PSK came to the rescue when the going became even harder but we did have an opening on Tuesday and again on Thursday on 40m where we had the pileups and worked many U.K. stations which was great. Friday brightened up on 20m and several busy times were had but by late after- noon we had to start dismantling the aerials and equipment. We just left a vertical dipole up for a little operating early doors on Saturday morning before vacating the cottage at 09.00 and sailing back to the main- land in the afternoon. There was a lot of interest in our little venture including an email from a station in Antarctica saying they had seen us on the cluster and been trying to call us but couldn?t make it so they wished us all the best. The weather was great and we had wall to wall sunshine every day and the contacts we didn?t get were made up with pints at the bar. Whilst the prime objective was the DXpedition, we wanted a holiday as well so a little sunbathing was thrown in for good measure. Lundy is a small but excellent place where the natives are both helpful and friendly and the food is good, but don?t expect television, internet or mobile phone coverage as there ain?t none. Would we go again ? you bet we would. 73?s de Mark, Keith and Nigel TU dit dit. EU-123. Members of the Camb-Hams will be active as GS3PYE/P from the Isle of Arran on the west part of the island near Balliekine (IO75HO) between May 22-29th. Activity will be on the HF bands, 6/4/2m, and the satellites. The location on the island favors the South/West/North as there's a hill to the east, but hope- fully that will not limit them. Peter, 2E0SQL, reports: "We'll be taking along an ICOM IC-910, Wimo X-Quads, Preamps and Yaesu G-5500 rotator all controlled by our favorite bit of software SatPC32 for backup. I'll have my FT-817 and Arrow, but this kit hasn't let us down yet for the last few trips." They plans to operate on all satellites both FM/SSB/CW, if you want a CW QSO you'll need to contact them as Peter will need to find a suitable CW operator. Peter will try to post regular updates on Twitter either using his own account @2e0sql or the groups account @g3pye and also posting updates on their Web site at: http://dx.camb-hams.com NA-036. Sergio, IK0FTA, QSL Manager of 1A0KM (S.M.O.M), reports to all DX hams/community that all activities from the station 1A0KM are published in advance and are available on their QRZ.com page as well as in the major DX bulletins. Recently some stations have been PIRATING the 1A0KM callsign and have made a dozen QSOs. Sergio states, [edited] "Please don't waste your time trying to work pirates and - over all - save your money and don't waste your time in sending QSL cards if the activity hasn't been published before hand on our QRZ.com page; I'm very sad to reply to many of you: 'sorry it was a pirate' ... so if you don't see our "publicly announcement" of activities on our QRZ.com page, consider those transmissions were made by pirates." 2016 ASIA PACIFIC DX CONVENTION (APDXC Press Release). Hello, Fellow DX-ers and Contesters! -- We are pleased to announce that the quasi- biennial Asia Pacific DX Convention (APDXC) will be held this year on November 11-13 in Osaka, Japan. As previous attendees know, in addition to the usual presentations on recent DX-peditions, technical sessions, DX dinners and so forth, we will also have the opportunity to join a tour at the Icom factory and partic- ipate in a technical session led by the Icom HF radio design team. And don't forget, APDXC is the only amateur radio event in Japan where all the programs are conducted in English! During the hours of the Icom factory tour, the non-ham members of your party will have the opportunity for a day of guided sightseeing and exploring in the Osaka-Kyoto-Nara area. We look forward to seeing you at the APDXC 2016, and we appreciate your introducing this convention to your DX/contest club members. For more details, please visit the APDXC website at: http://www.apdxc.org For convention updates, check our website often, or send an email to subscribe to the APDXC newsletter. Rare and distant locations always affect visiting DXers, compelling them to view this wonderful world and its differences in a new way. Rare and new countries are typically rare for a reason. http://www.qrz.com/db/OH2BH Martti?s 2016 anniversary journey will take him to many of those original locations, allowing you to refresh your memories at the other end of the radio circuit. The ensuing year may even bring something new: DXing re-born every morning as the Palos Verdes Sun Dancers commence their rituals of bringing back radio propagation to those who Deserve. The Deserving is here spelled with a capital D. So, join the bandwagon in Madeira! Use the password ?QBH70? to put the pileup on hold and share one of your memories right on the spot. At the ripe age of 70 or more it is wonderful to have those ancient years return just like yesterday. This mode of DXing is called RETRO DXpeditioning. BH-SH AWARD (Back Home - Sweet Home) -- After CT3BH, there will be more. Dotting the world is the greatest pastime of DXers, even though returning to one?s sweet home tends to beat such dotting. Qualifying for the BH-SH award is a 14-dot mission: each country with OH2BH operating alone and/or as part of a group during 2016 gives you 1 point, whereas working Martti at his home gives you 5 points ? you need 10 countries to qualify. Good luck in your hunt for the BH-SH award! Activities so far in 2016 include CU2KG/CR2X, Z68BH/Z60A, and ZA/OH2BH. ? de OH2BH CQ ANNOUNCES 2016 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES (Press Release, Date May 20th): CQ magazine today announced its 2016 Hall of Fame inductees, including only the second non-amateurs elected to the CQ DX Hall of Fame, two new inductees to the CQ Contest Hall of Fame and 21 new members of the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame. For only the second time in its history, this year, we induct a non-amateur - in fact, a group of non-amateurs - to the CQ DX Hall of Fame (The first was Islands on the Air founder Geoff Watts in 1977). The 2016 inductees are: Nigel Jolly and the Crew of the RV Braveheart - Jolly and his crew (and ship) have provided transportation for - and assured the safety of - many of the major DXpeditions to southern islands in the past 15 years, DXpeditions that likely would not otherwise have taken place. [edited] -- PDXG Donates Lenovo Laptop to Bill Moore NC1L: As you may recall, after a life altering automobile accident in July, 2014, Bill Moore, NC1L, stepped down as the ARRL Awards Manager. Recently we learned that Bill was in need of a laptop computer. His current Windows laptop is quite old and very much out of date. He is using an iPhone and iPad but a Windows 10 laptop will be of great help in his recovery. Bill cannot use his fingers except in a very limited way and he has no strength. We hope this current technology lap- top will be the foundation for development of an interface that allows Bill to use the Remote Ham Radio site with push buttons rather than mouse actions. This particular laptop was used on the TX3X Chesterfield Island DX- pedition. The machine was refurbished by PDXG, loaded with Windows 10 and presented to Bill by Les Kalmus, W2LK. http://pdxg.net/images/PDXG/Info/NC1L-and-W2LK--web.jpg PDXG is extremely happy to have been able to help Bill on his long road to recovery. This year's NODXA Hospitality Suite at the Crown Plaza was exceptional. Most of the main DXers showed up at the Suite and stayed until the late hours of the morning. Plenty of food and drink were provided. I think this year's highlight was a visit by 2016's CQ Amateur Radio DX Hall of Famer, Nigel Jolly, KC3HAE. His name fits him and what an enjoyable personality this individual has. My wife (along with Janeen, W8ZET) served breakfast to the individuals in the block of NODXA/W8ZET rooms and were able to cook Nigel his first ever waffle. Nigel never heard of waffles before and really enjoyed them. We tried to convince Nigel to buy a waffle maker to put on the Braveheart. However, Nigel gave us a long and interesting explanation why it would not work on his ship (110v 60Hz versus 220v 50Hz, he also thought it would interfere with the radios). Anyway, it was a pleasure meeting him for the first time. At the SWODXA DX Dinner it was announced that the DXpedition of the year was VP8STI/VP8SGI operation as well as the CQ magazine 2016 Hall of Fame inductees and CQ DX and Contest Halls of Fame honorees. (See OPDX.1266.1 for details) The DX Forum had a great line-up, starting with Dave, K3LP, showing and narrating a video of the VP8STI/VP8SGI DXpedition (Paul, N6PSE was also there). The second talk was on the K5P Palmyra DXpedition by Craig/K9CT and Lou/N2TU. The third talk was on TX3X Chesterfield Island DXpedition by Gene, K5GS, and the fourth talk was by Robert, KK6EK, on the VK0EK Heard Island DXpedition. The 2016 Dayton HamVention seemed to be well attended this year and the weather was almost perfect. There was very light rain on Saturday (not a wash-out) and cloudy most of the time on Friday/Saturday. Sunday was warm and had perfect weather. All in all, it was a great time as usual and I am totally burned-out and recovering (at least trying to while watching the grandkids) in Murfreesboro, TN. I will be looking forward to next year (hopefully at the same location).... EG9, CEUTA AND MELILLA. Operators Javier/EC7DZZ and Manuel/EA7FKH will be active as EG9LH from Melilla between July 16-17th. Activity will be from Faro de Morro (LH:CEU-012,FEA:E-6762, ML 52001). YASME FOUNDATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS (Press Release Dated May 26, 2016). The Yasme Excellence Award is presented to individuals who, through their own service, creativity, effort and dedication, have made a significant contribution to amateur radio. The contribution may be in recognition of technical, operating or organizational achievement, as all three are necessary for amateur radio to grow and prosper. The Yasme Excellence Award is in the form of a cash grant and an individually-engraved crystal globe. The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation is pleased to announce the award of the Yasme Excellence Award to the following individuals: * Tim Duffy, K3LR: While Tim is involved in many facets of amateur radio, the Yasme Excellence Award is made in recognition of his adaptation and development of the Contest University (CTU), now in its tenth year. For the IARU HF Championship in July, SHRAK will be operating its head- quarters station Z60A with multiple transmitters from a number of different locations around the country. Nigel, G3TXF, is looking forward to visiting Kosovo for the third time and thanks the members of SHRAK for the opportunity to put their HQ club station Z60A on the air for the CQ WPX-CW Contest. As part of the wider promotion of Amateur Radio in Kosovo, a permanent club station is being built at the Technical University in Pristina. In support of this major project, the UK's DX Foundation CDXC has been pleased to help out the new University club station by donating a Yaesu G-1000DXC rotator for their HF antennas. QSL Z60A via OH2BH. Z60A logs will be up-loaded to ClubLog. ZL7, CHATHAM ISLAND (Update).
