Members of the Radio Arcala team will be active as CR2X during the ARRL DX SSB Contest (March 5-6th) as a Multi- Multi entry. QSL via OH2BH. PRESS RELEASE BY MARTTI, OH2BH: RADIO ARCALA FAREWELL PARTY IN THE AZORES -- CR2X IN THE 2016 ARRL DX SSB CONTEST -- Radio Arcala, OH8X, is an alliance of serious Finnish hams and their partners. They work on a novel set of concepts by utilizing the latest telecommunication technology for innovative Amateur Radio approaches by using contesting as a demonstration test bed and to push the envelope. By targeting youth, the group also hopes to attract newcomers into our fascinating science. CR2X, the Radio Arcala station in the Azores, was established to serve those aims. It uses the advanced radio technology to push the European contesting bar to heights never before witnessed. They once did the same in the Canary Islands, some twenty-five years ago. Many of those EA8 records still stand. The CR2X project was to last 5 years, eventually being extended for some time to accommodate the strange behavior of sunspots in the present cycle. The project has taken all major EU contest records to a level that may last for some time. The CQWW/ARRL SOAB records were captured as the main target, further flanked by all single-band CW/SSB records in the ARRL DX contests. For one final time, the Radio Arcala group is getting together in the Azores. They will modify the single-op station to run in a multi-multi setting, using the latest power splitting techniques with which three bands are served simultaneously by one antenna, both receive and transmit. http://www.force12inc.com/products/complete-hf-20-15-10-meter-14-21-28-mhz-triplexer-system-by-4o3a.html The CR2X operation in the 2016 ARRL SSB contest marks the inaugural use of such a slick station concept within a serious multi-multi operator contest effort. The group additionally plans on using the latest in RF power, sporting multiple Italian SPE 1.3 light weight amps. The farewell activity involves three (3) Azoreans: CU2BV, CU2CE and CU2DX, along with seven (7) Finns: OH2BH, OH2PM, OH2UA, OH6KN, OH6KZP, OH7EA and OH8NC. The farewell activity is supported by Azorean hams: the recipients of thirty (30) hard-cover, 60-page books about their beautiful islands, Europe?s best radio location, will be drawn among the stations that contact CR2X on all six bands during this weekend?s ARRL DX SSB Contest. Special CR2X QSLs will be sent automatically from Radio Arcala's regular QSL address: via OH2BH. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME (DST). Remember to change your clocks next weekend. Countries in the Northern Hemisphere (most of N. American and some of the Caribbean) who observe Daylight Saving Time, should change their clocks on Sunday, March 13th at 2:00 AM, and should move their "local clocks" forward 1 hour to 3:00:00 AM local time. Daylight Saving Time will end on Sunday, November 6th at 2:00 AM. European countries will switch to DST on March 27th. For the history and details about DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2016.html ADDED NOTES: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know not to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs. We will be shopping, cleaning the tents, and loading the Braveheart, preparing for the scheduled sailing on March 10th. All news while the team is en route and at Heard will be posted here: http://www.vk0ek.org * It was reported by Rich, KY6R, on March 3rd [edited]: The first team members will arrive in Cape Town today, and several others start their flights over the next couple of days. This VK0EK Blog Site is now switching over to "DXpedition Mode". DXpedition Mode is where we will concentrate on everything DX and DXpedition. You will notice over the next few days changes that accentuate this. Some of the sections that used to be on this site can be found in their entirety on: http://www.heardisland.com But have been replaced by new sections such as "How to Work Us". Later today, the banner will show the planned Voyage dates and On Air dates - which is the number one question we have received so far. Second to that have been propagation questions. The Support Site is up and running and working very well. It handles everything and anything that you might have questions or concerns with, from propagation questions to souvenir order questions. You can find the Support System here: https://vk0ek.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new VK0EK DXPEDITION NEWS (Heard Island Expedition Newsletter Vol. 2 No. 3). The following was sent out on March 23rd [edited]: After more than a year of work, we are happy to finally get into the thick of it. The team will be complete in Mayotte on Thursday, March 24th, around noon! The schedule for the coming days is pretty full, with the last purchases and technical checks and the loading of the boat. We will sail away on Saturday, March 26th. Our chief pilot will communicate updated information on the unloading and installation. At this time, we hope to be on the air on the evening of March 29 after a full day spent assembling. A page displaying in real time the progress of the team has been set up: http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/track-us-in-real-time As a reminder, we will use the band plan shared with our friends at VK0EK. Some windows are very narrow and we will have to live together in all understanding, without departing from the intended plan, at the risk of generating confusion and disruption between the two activities. The band plan is available on both websites. Our different pilots are available to transit informations to the team (JJ3PRT, ON9CFG, N5FG). The 10 operators will not have access to their personal emails and because of a lack of internet connection we will not be watching the DX-Cluster. No need to transit messages for us through that medium. http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/pilots Every day, we will transmit via satellite our logs to our chief pilot F5UKW who will upload them to ClubLog. However, the ?leader board? feature will not be activated. No modification or search of the log will be made by our pilots. If in doubt, work us again. http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/online-log The QSL Manager is Flo, F5CWU. He will process OQRS and the direct QSL requests as well as the cards received via the Bureau. The ClubLog's OQRS will be active by the end of the operation. We strongly recommend its use. Later, the logs will be loaded on LoTW and eQSL. http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/qsl-infos As part of our expedition on Juan de Nova Island, we are pleased to announce that a stamp set will be issued by T.A.A.F. QSL cards sent direct will automatically have the envelope/stamp. We will unveil this commemor- ative object later. Everyone connected to the FT4JA project would like to thank all of you ho have already contributed in one way or another to the project. It would not be at this stage without the tremendous mobilization of clubs, foun- dations and individual donors. The early donation program will be closed on Friday 25th at 1200z. The "donors" page of our website will not be updated further after that specific time. http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/how-to-help-us 73 and we?ll see you on the air in a few days FT4JA ? There were SLIM operations before that date. According to one of the press releases about their setup on March 23rd: "The team worked very hard and basically set up a little city which will be home for almost 3 weeks. With cooperative weather, the team ? with superb help from the crew of the Braveheart followed a very well crafted plan and put up just about everything in one day. They had to transport all gear 1/2 mile using one ATV and two carts." Look for photographs in their press releases on the VK0EK Web page. The press release on March 24th, reported: The day of landing, the team was able to get the 30 and 40 m 4-squares erected, and partially completed a tri-band yagi. We opened with two stations, on 30 and 40 meters. This morning there was still a lot of work to be done on additional antennas, stations, and camp facilities. With no propagation on 30 and 40, radio operations went on hold and all hands went toward further setup. Around 1300 UTC the 30m station was activated again. A few kinks with the IT system were worked out, and we now have more antennas and positions up. Only 40 and 30 are currently open (no 80 or 160 yet). We hope to be on all bands in the next few days. After a few technical difficulties on- island, DXA is working properly and you can check that you are in the log at . The team members are all well, but very tired from long hours and tough work. We have mostly had good weather, and appreciate all the thoughts and support from our partners in the ham radio and scientific community. Our hope is to be on 80 and 160 tonight, but that will depend on the weather. Presently the weather at Atlas Cove is 6 C (43 F), wind NE at 6 m/s (12 kts), under mostly cloudy skies. by ky6r Status Update ? 3/25/2016 @ 13:16z -- Presently we have stations running on 17 m SSB, 30 m CW, and the 20 m SSB station is firing up. DXCC NEWS. Dave, NN1N, from ARRL HQ in Newington, CT, reports the following on March 28th: DXCC Deletion of Kingman Reef -- The ARRL Awards Committee has voted to delete Kingman Reef (KH5) from the DXCC List, effective 29th March, 2016. Kingman Reef will be added to the Deleted Entities List on 29th March, 2016. The total number of entities on the List will drop from 340 to 339. The deletion process is described in DXCC Rules Section II DXCC List Criteria, Part 5(a) Deletion Criteria: ?An entity may be deleted from the List if it no longer satisfies the criteria under which it was added. However, if the entity continues to meet one or more currently existing rules, it will remain on the List.? With respect to the previous paragraph?s text, Kingman Reef?s original addition by virtue of separate administration has changed (separate ad- ministration by the U.S. Navy has been removed), and the reef does not meet any current criteria to remain on the list. The U.S. Fish and Wild- life Service administers Kingman Reef and Palmyra Island. The reef is too close to Palmyra Island to count as a separate entity. The reef is now considered part of the Palmyra/Jarvis DXCC entity. DXCC members who have affirmed credit with Kingman Reef will see their current entity totals drop by one on their DXCC awards -- including on the bands and modes where Kingman Reef credit is given. They will also see their DXCC Challenge totals drop commensurately. Honor Roll status will now be attainable after confirming 330 entities on the DXCC List. FT4JA JUAN DE NOVA DXPEDITION NEWS.
