NCDXF NEWS (W6AM Don Wallace Museum Foundation donates to Northern Cali- fornia DX Foundation -- Press Release, 30 May 2016). A donation of $29,000 on behalf of the Don Wallace Museum Foundation (DWMF) was recently given to NCDXF. After 30 years the DWMF is closing down, as the area of the famous W6AM Rhombic Ranch in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, has succumbed to residential property development, announced board chairman Joe Locascio, K5KT. "The donation comes with NO restrictions or caveats. As I strongly suspect, Don (the original) W6AM would favor such a donation to an organization dedicated to DXing!" Former notable members of the DWMF include the Honorable Barry M. Gold- water/K7UGA as Honorary Chairman, John Alexander/K6SVL, John Vanderlip (Son of Frank Vanderlip - early developer of Palos Verdes), Ken Dyda, former founding Councilman of Rancho Palos Verdes and current sitting Mayor as well as several others that were dedicated to the memory of Don C. Wallace W6AM and Radio here on Palos Verdes. Mr. Locascio states, "We are in the last efforts in closing down the Don Wallace Museum Foundation, Inc... now after nearly 30 years of exis- tence. The W6AM Radio Club will continue as long as needed to support the W6AM call sign." "We, the board of directors of the DWM Foundation, make this donation on behalf of previous donors, many of which were DXers and were looking forward to some Radio activity with respect to the old W6AM Rhombic Ranch here in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Unfortunately, we the BOD, were not able to achieve our long term goal of an actual Museum with an active Radio station on the property. However, there is an 18" X 24" Bronze Plaque that is attached to a BIG, heavy Palos Verdes rock that is placed at the entry way to the Wallace Ranch (see SEP '15 QST, page 20), where 83 homes are now placed entirely (if not mostly) on the ~24 Acres of property owned by W6AM at the time of his death in May of 1985." "This large grant to NCDXF is our way of letting the donors to the museum know the funds were passed to a charitable foundation whose goals are con- sistent with the museum goals." The NCDXF board of directors has assured the DWMF that the donated funds will be carefully used to support DXpeditions to the most wanted entities, which tend to be the most expensive. Has your club or foundation considered donating to NCDXF to support DXpeditions? NCDXF would like to thank those individuals who stopped by our Dayton booth to make new or continuing individual contributions. Have you donated yet? See http://ncdxf.org/ for details and recent news. Glenn Johnson, W0GJ -- NCDXF Vice President OE, AUSTRIA. Alex, OE1DXU, currently in Vienna, informed OPDX on Friday that he and others will be active as OE5XWM/p. The operation is called "close to heaven". This is the group's 3rd "high altitude" DX activation (being at 3250 meters above sea level -- being very cold up there, but they hope that their amps will keep them warm). They also mentioned, "We tried several month to get a special call, but it was denied. This will not keep us from getting on the air from the GREAT mountains in AUSTRIA!!!" OX, GREENLAND. Announced on June 2nd [edited]: The Quake Contesters who previously activated YJ0X on their DXpedition to Vanuatu in 2014 announce that they will be operating from Norfolk Island with callsign VK9NZ between September 25th and October 8th, 2016. The operators are well-known DXers Geoff/ZL3GA, Mark/ZL3AB, Paul/ZL4TT (ex-ZL4PW) and Phil/ ZL3PAH. They will operate 160m to 6m (depending on propagation) with up to 3 stations operating simultaneously. Equipment will be 2 x K3 & KPA500, and 2 x FT450D. One FT450D will be dedicated to 6m with a delta loop monitoring for openings. They will operate CW, SSB and RTTY and will be attempting to give QSOs to those parts of the world which need VK9N most according to ClubLog. They will be operating in the Oceania SSB Contest during the first weekend of October (October 1-2nd). Antennas will include two folding hexbeams for 20m ? 10m and verticals & wires or the lower bands. They are staying at Anson Bay Lodge where there is plenty of room for antennas. Since two of their XYLs are coming along this will be a ?DXpedition with shopping? in their unique Quake Contesters style, but do not be deceived ? this is a serious DXpedition and their target is to make 30k+ QSOs during their stay and to hand out as many ATNOs and new band/mode slots to as many DXers as they can. ZL3PAH is the QSL manager. QSLs will be available via OQRS on ClubLog. Logs will be posted to LoTW after the DXpedition as soon as they have been checked and busted QSOs corrected. VK9NZ will use the expedition feature of ClubLog including leaderboards. Depending on internet reliability they hope to post QSOs in real time to ClubLog. Members of the DXpedition will cover their own travel and accommodation costs, but donations will be sought from individuals and DX associations to cover additional costs including excess baggage, equipment insurance and any one-time necessary hardware costs. ADDED NOTE: For more details and updates, see: https://vk9nz.wordpress.com XX9, MACAO. Gerben, PG5M, will be active as XX9TGM (pending) from Macao (AS-075) between June 20-27th. Ralph K0IR, Bob K4UEE and Erling LA6VM have been working on this project since returning from Peter I (3Y0X) some 10 years ago. We are making this announcement now, so that other DXpedition teams that may be considering Bouvet as a DXpedition target can re-direct their time and effort elsewhere. In summary, we have an agreement with Nigel Jolly to provide trans- portation, a helicopter, pilot and mechanic. We submitted a preliminary plan to the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) some time ago and it has been accepted. A permit will be issued to land on Slakhallet (the huge glacier that covers the island). We have a team committed, and the finances are doable. As per our funding model, we commit to paying one-half the expenses involved and we are asking the DX community to pay the other half of the expenses. This arrangement has never failed us or you, the DXer. Experience summary: Leaders have eleven" Dxpedition of the Year" awards, they have activated a dozen "top-ten" DXCC entities and amassed huge QSO totals at their most recent DXpeditions i.e. Desecheo 118.000 QSOs, HK0NA 195,000 QSOs, FT5ZM, 170,000 QSOs, K1N 140,000 QSOs. Their experience in the Antarctic and Southern Oceans region is unparalleled. Heard Island, South Sandwich, South Georgia, Peter I, South Orkneys, Amsterdam Island, as well as numerous other operations from ALL seven continents. This team and it's leaders have have collectively given the given the DX community over 4,000,000 DXpedition QSO's. Our website is under development and fundraising will begin in the months ahead. We are pleased that everything has finally come together so that we can activate this most difficult, dangerous and rare DXCC entity. Your DXpedition leaders, Ralph K0IR Bob K4UEE Erling LA6VM ADDED NOTE FROM EDITOR: Earlier in the week, the following two articles about Bouvet had shown-up before the above announcement was sent out: * Paul, N6PSE, posted to his blog on June 5th -- "Bouvet, So Far Away": https://n6pse.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/bouvet-so-far-away * Rich, KY6R, posted to his blog on June 5th -- "How to Raise Funds for Bouvet, 3Y0/B: UPDATE! https://ky6r.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/how-to-raise-funds-for-bouvet-3y0b 4JF1, AZERBAIJAN (Special Event). [edited] DxCoffee and the DXUniversity assign the 2015 Best Communication Award to K1N, Navassa -- The 2015 Best Communication Award is assigned to K1N, the DxPedition to Navassa, that took place in February 2015. This Dxpedition deserved our recognition for having captived the ham community in the difficult task to activate this very rare entity after many years' attempts. The Dxpedition's website, , got us involved in many details. Just see the amount of daily updates during the operation's days, with directions and advices to increase one's chances of a QSO. We have appreciated a lot the several pictures and especially the video, made with a GoPro camera, mounted on Jerry WB9Z's head. Not just the website, also social media played a role, with an excellent use of Facebook (a lot of news and pictures) and some Tweets. In addition to the proper award, we have once again considered a few "special mentions" for those Dxpeditions who have stand out as far as communication is concerned. These special mentions will be announced shortly on these pages. The Best Communication Award, rules: http://www.dxcoffee.com/eng/communication-award/ http://www.dxcoffee.com/eng/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/dxcoffee_commaward.jpg Fabrizio IU0BMP -- Award Manager CY9C ST. YASME NEWS (Press Release dated June 15th). THE YASME FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO SUPPORT YOUTH INVOLVEMENT IN AMATEUR RADIO -- The Board of Directors of the Yasme Foundation is pleased to announce three grants in furtherance of Yasme's goal of encouraging youth participation in amateur radio and operating activities. The Yasme Foundation encourages amateurs to support activities that promote amateur radio and result in new licensees around the world. The sixth edition of the Youngsters on the Air (YOTA) conference will take place in July 2016 in Wagrain, Austria . Over 100 young amateurs from all IARU regions will gather in the Austrian Alps to participate in a series of programs and workshops about amateur radio as well as inter-cultural exchanges and social interaction. Gatherings such as YOTA exemplify the ability of amateurs to work together across national borders and ethnicities in the best "ham spirit" of friendship. The Yasme Board is pleased to assist in helping young amateurs attend this meeting that otherwise would be unable to attend. 1. Amateur Radio Association of the Republic of Kosovo (SHRAK) The Yasme grant will enable two youth amateur radio operators from Kosovo to attend the YOTA conference. This will be the first time these amateurs will have travelled outside their home country. SHRAK was recently admitted to the IARU as a member society, an additional step toward enabling Kosovo to be added to the ARRL DXCC entity list. 2. Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society (EARS) Two youth operators from EARS will also be attending the YOTA conference. This extends Yasme?s support of the ET3AA station and the previous grant enabling travel by EARS members to participate in the 2016 ARI Inter- national DX Contest from Estonia. EARS member participation furthers amateur radio activity from eastern Africa and encourages interest in amateur radio by other African youth. 3. North American Participants Three young amateurs from the United States will also attend the YOTA meeting with the assistance of the Yasme grant and a similar grant from the Northern California DX Foundation. As invited members of IARU in ITU Region 2, it is the hope of both Boards that they will return with ideas for extending the successes of YOTA to young North American amateurs. * * * * * The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing (long distance communication) and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. KOSOVO IARU SOCIETY RECEIVES VISITORS FOR THE IARU HF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND (Press Release From Pristina, dated June 18th). [edited] From The Desk of Vjollca Caka, Z61VB, SHARK, President -- Z60A On the air from July 6th through July 11th. The 2016 IARU HF World Championship not only marks the very first entry of the Kosovo Amateur Radio Association (SHRAK) as a new HQ multiplier, but the week also represents multiple other valuables for Kosovar hams. In a major outing, the SHRAK youth delegation headed by Driton Sadiku, Z61DX, with Elona Shatri, Z63ESC, Edona Sela, Z63ESB, and Blindon Krasniqi, Z63BKA, will travel to the IARU YOTA conference in Austria. Their selected team will meet their initial instructors Hans, PB2T, and Martti, OH2BH, as a kick-off for their first trip outside Kosovo. This outing received the sincere support of the Amateur Radio Society of Austria (?VSV), the Embassy of Austria in Kosovo, and the Yasme Foundation, Inc. The majority of the 50+ new hams in Kosovo come from the ranks of the Technical University of Pristina, leading to another interesting link taking place on the professional front. The local university rarely receives visiting teachers, and thus Dr. Kim ?stman, OH6KZP, will give a lecture on the latest trends in RF microelectronics circuit development. This session is hosted by the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineer- ing (FIEK) at the Technical University of Pristina, and the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Dr. Enver Hamiti. The team will also exercise by hoisting a new Force-12 XR6 beam with a Yaesu G1000DXC rotator on top of the university building, in the heart of capital Pristina. These were kindly donated by the Chiltern U.K. DX Foundation and by Force-12 represented by Bill Hein, AA7XT. On the weekend the local folks team up with their visitors for the IARU Championship contest, at multiple locations in and near Pristina. The visiting operating team includes Hans, PB2T, Kenneth, OZ1IKY, Pertti, OG2M, Kim, OH6KZP, Martti, OH2BH, Pekka, OH2TA, and Mario, S56A. PJ2, CURACAO. Operators Jim/K3NK, Joe/W3HNK, Jim/K3NK, and Jeff/K8ND are there as VERONA guests and will be active from the PJ2T station on Curacao (SA-099) between July 1-12th. Operators (outside of the contest) will probably sign PJ2/homecall. The group is there to participation in the IARU HF World Championship as PJ2HQ and as a Multi-Op entry. QSL via LoTW.
