Doug Zwiebel, KR2Q, Named Director of CQ World Wide DX Contest (Hicksville, NY) -- Longtime CQ World Wide DX Contest Committee member Doug Zwiebel, KR2Q, has been named Director of the CQ World Wide DX Contest, CQ magazine Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, announced today. Doug succeeds Randy Thompson, K5ZD, who has been CQWW Director for the past four years. The CQWW DX Contest is amateur radio's most popular contest and may be the world's largest competitive sporting event in terms of numbers of participants. Zwiebel is the longest-serving member of the CQWW Contest Committee, having first joined in 1979. He brought the contest into the computer age by writing the first mass log-checking program (using Business BASIC) in 1980, and has devoted thousands of hours of volunteer time to the contest community. Doug was also responsible for suggesting the establish- ment of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame in 1986. First licensed in 1966, Zwiebel began contesting a year later and has never stopped. Over the years, he has operated at some of the nation's top contest superstations, including K2GL (where he was chief 10-meter operator for a decade), K5NA and N2RM. He has operated primarily low power from his home station and holds six CQWW QRP records, more than any other active station. He also holds DXCC Honor Roll #1 and has worked more than 250 DX entities using less than one watt of transmitter power. Professionally, Zwiebel is a hospital administrator in New York City. He and his wife live in Randolph, New Jersey. They have two adult daugh- ters, both of whom are doctors. CQ Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, said Zwiebel brings a unique perspective to the table. "Doug has operated from some of the world's top contest superstations as well as single-operator QRP," Ross noted. "So he under- stands equally well the perspective of both the 'big guns' and the 'little pistols,' without whom the contest could not be nearly as successful as it is. I look forward to working closely with Doug." DXCC NEWS. QSL Manager Victor, UA2FM, reported on QRZ.com, on July 2nd, "Eugeny, RI1FJ (aka UA4RX), suddenly showed up on the air late June. I have no e-mail communication with the Island, as there are no post/telephone/transportation services there, but company satellite forbidden for private use. I was neither notified by Eugeny of his QRV, nor about problems he had during this season. The only thing I know, - it's him who signs RI1FJ, as many hams worked him reported this. I do not know whether Eugeny is able to send his ADIF logs through his <@winlink.org> address as we did in his previous operations. I was told all steel and metal materials and equipment was removed from the island before summer 2015. Perhaps this was the reason of RI1FJ silence. Gents, please keep working RI1FJ on the bands, but be patient with QSL requests until I establish log exchange procedure. I'll be back with more information as soon I have it..... Thanks, Victor UA2FM" ADDED NOTE: Eugeny seems to be working mainly 20 meters CW and RTTY. Times of activity have been between 0651-0705z, 1130-1330z, 1238-1820z and 2015-0445z. CQ NEWS................. * (Press Release - Scott Rought, KA8SMA, Named CQ Magazine QRP Editor). Dated July 13th -- CQ magazine today announced the appointment of R. Scott Rought, KA8SMA, as the magazine's new QRP (low-power) Editor, effective with the August 2016 issue. Rought succeeds Dennis Lazar, W4DNN, who took the position on an interim basis a year ago. A low-power devotee for more than 25 years, Rought has been a ham since 1983 and holds an Extra Class license (along with his original call sign!). He has operated almost exclusively QRP, on both phone and CW, since 2000, and describes the antennas at his Traverse City, Michigan home as "a spider web of wire strung between trees" as well as a roof-mounted homebrew 2-element beam for 20 meters. He previously wrote about his "QRP Superstation" in the April, 2012 issue of CQ. Professionally, Rought is a project manager with an environmental consulting company in northern Michigan. He says, "I'm looking forward to providing a column that fellow hams will enjoy reading and that will entice QRO (high power) operators to give QRP a try." Rought's inaugural column in the August issue of CQ includes a "QRP guarantee" for high- power operators, including contesters, DXers and casual operators. The QRP column appears bi-monthly in CQ. The August issue of CQ should be in print subscribers' mailboxes by the end of July and available to digital subscribers as of August 1. * (Press Release -- New CQ World Wide DX Contest Director Restructures Contest Leadership). Dated July 16th -- Newly-appointed CQ World Wide DX Contest Director Doug Zwiebel, KR2Q, has announced a restructuring of the contest committee's leadership as his first formal act. Zwiebel is changing the director's position to a "triumverate," with Scott Robbins, W4PA, joining the committee and Bob Naumann, W5OV, re-joining the committee as co-directors. The change has the full support of CQ management. "We will all share the various tasks of 'Director' and we all will provide backup or contingency coverage for each other for most, if not all, aspects of CQWW Committee leadership," explained Zwiebel, adding, "We are all equals." Three station sites in and around the capital Prishtina were used, including the University of Prishtina's Electrical Engineering Faculty club station Z64EEF, close to the heart of the city. We managed to keep 3-5 stations on the air at all times, with one site also extending its single tribander to several high bands simultaneously through triplexer technology. Band conditions were poorer than hoped for, thus partially turning the contest into a European QSO Party. We enjoyed high rates nonetheless, and 10m and 15m provided nice ES openings. General activity levels also seemed pretty high, which is encouraging when faced with an approaching solar minimum. On behalf of the non-Kosovar members of the team, I'd like to thank our Z6 hosts for all of their tireless efforts in making the Z60A HQ operation a success, and particularly for their warm hospitality. On a personal note, I'm very happy to have made so many new friends in a fascinating culture on my very first visit. Also, thanks to all for the QSOs and for warmly welcoming a new IARU society to the international contesting scene! SHRAK will be back. Activity will be on 40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters using CW and SSB. Cezar reported on July 25th: With only a few days left before heading up north, I spent the weekend checked all the equipment. After returning from the Antipodes Is. (ZL9A) in mid-January, I worked to alter the design of how the radials of the multi-band wire verticals were connected to the feeder line in order improve the robustness of the overall antenna construction. The result is a definite improvement in the strength on the antenna wires. Unfortunately, this led, however, to a slight increase of the SWR, particularly on 20m. As such, I spent time on Saturday to improve it, with mostly positive results. I have also checked the propagation forecast with various regions of the world, which allowed me to conclude firmly that the 20 and 30m will be the bands of interest for this expedition. In view of this, with help from George (VE3GHK), I have now a 20m monoband wire vertical with exceptionally low SWR on this band." QSL via VE3LYC direct or OQRS. Hi Fellow DXers, Just received the following two messages..... 73 de Tedd KB8NW Message #1 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dayton Hamvention?? 2017 News Update The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) regrets to inform our many vendors, visitors and stakeholders that, unfortunately, HARA has announced the closing of their facility. We have begun execution of our contingency plan to move Hamvention?? 2017 to a new home. DARA and Hamvention?? have enjoyed many successful years working together with HARA Arena and we wish the Wampler family the best. DARA and Hamvention?? have been working on a contingency plan in the event HARA would become unavailable. We have spent many hours over the last few years evaluating possible locations and have found one in the area we believe will be a great new home! Due to logistics and timing issues, we will make a formal announcement introducing our new partner. This information will be coming soon. We all believe this new venue will be a spectacular place to hold our beloved event. Please rest assured we will have the event on the same weekend and, since it will be in the region, the current accommodations and outside events already planned for Hamvention 2017 should not be affected. We look forward to your continued support as we move to a new future with The Dayton Hamvention??. Ron Cramer General Chairman Dayton Hamvention 2017 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Message #2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Hamvention?? has announced that Hara Arena, the home of Hamvention since 1964, is closing. Hamvention 2017 will be held at a new location in the Dayton area, yet to be disclosed. ???The Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) regrets to inform our many vendors, visitors and stakeholders that, unfortunately, HARA has announced the closing of their facility,??? a news release from Hamvention General Chair Ron Cramer, KD8ENJ, said today (July 29). ???We have begun execution of our contingency plan to move Hamvention?? 2017 to a new home. DARA and Hamvention have enjoyed many successful years working together with HARA Arena and we wish the Wampler family the best.??? According to Cramer, DARA and Hamvention have been working on a contingency plan in the event that the deteriorating Hara Arena ever should become unavailable. ???We have spent many hours over the last few years evaluating possible locations and have found one in the area we believe will be a great new home!??? The announcement said that DARA and Hamvention expect to make a formal announcement soon ???introducing our new partner.??? ???We all believe this new venue will be a spectacular place to hold our beloved event,??? Cramer said. ???Please rest assured we will have the event on the same weekend and, since it will be in the region, the current accommodations and outside events already planned for Hamvention 2017 should not be affected.??? ???We look forward to your continued support as we move to a new future with The Dayton Hamvention.??? A hockey team???s cancellation of its upcoming season earlier this month had raised questions about the future availability of Hara Arena for Hamvention??. Hara Arena has been facing long-standing financial problems ??? including unpaid property taxes. Renovations promised for the 2016 Hamvention never materialized. Hamvention attracted more than 25,000 visitors this spring and is worth millions of dollars to the Dayton area economy. The Wampler family has owned and operated Hara Arena since its humble origins in the 1950s, when Wampler Ballarena ??? then a dance hall and now an exhibit hall familiar to Hamvention visitors ??? was built in what had been a family-owned orchard. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Sun Jul 31 11:35:19 2016 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2016 11:35:19 -0400 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin #1276.2 Message-ID: <310591.75062.bm@smtp115.sbc.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1276.2 Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1276.2 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Special Bulletin No. 1276.2 BID: $OPDX.1276.2 July 30, 2016 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Written/Sent From Strongsville, Ohio Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, and NG3K for the following DX information.
