He states [edited], "On October 13th, 2014, I was QRV on 10m SSB until 13:20 GMT and after many of the European OM's started to call like crazy (chaos) I decided to switch to RTTY. I announced this as well on the frequency. Meanwhile, somebody started operating under my (S79KB) callsign continued to make QSOs for about an hour. You can see it on the DX-Cluster (spots) that there were QSOs on at the same time for SSB and RTTY. So ALL QSOs from October 13th, 2014, from 13:20 pm - 14:30 pm on SSB are NOT valid. VP8SGI/VP8STI DXPEDITION NEWS (Press Release from the Intrepid-DX Group VP8STI/VP8SGI Team). Paul, N6PSE, sent out the following on December 31st [edited]: Greetings from the Intrepid DX Group VP8STI/VP8SGI Team -- We are pleased to report that the R/V Braveheart has arrived in Stanley, the Falkland Islands and is making preparations for the arrival of the VP8STI/VP8SGI team. The Braveheart is taking on 90,000 liters of fuel and enough provisions for their 36 day voyage with the Intrepid VP8 team. At 59 degrees South, Southern Thule in the South Sandwich chain of islands is closer to the Antarctic Circle than either Heard Island (53 degrees) or Bouvet Island (54 degrees) The climate will be cold and harsh with strong winds. Current weather in Southern Thule is -2 degrees C with moderate winds. After camping in tents on Southern Thule for ten days, our team will voyage to South Georgia Island and set up camp for an additional ten days. Our goals are to operate fast and efficiently and to provide as many all-time new contacts with these rare entities. We will make the extra effort to work the most remote and difficult regions. All of our plans are going very well. We have raised 74% of the funds needed to complete our Dxpedition. We are very grateful for all Foundation, Club and Individual support. We have updated our QSL page and OQRS will be live as soon as we complete each activation. We will make every effort to upload our logs to Clublog each day. We expect to have challenges in doing so as at 59 degrees South, Southern Thule Island is outside of the Inmarsat BGAN coverage footprint. We are very excited to be activating the #3 and #8 most wanted DXCC entities on a combined trip. You can view all details of our Dxpedition at: http://www.intrepid-dx.com/vp8 Upon our return to Stanley, the team will operate as VP8IDX for five days with an emphasis on 160 meters. Please watch for updates and announcements in The Daily DX, DX-World, DX Coffee and DX News. [as well as the OPDX] Thank you, and Happy New Year! Paul N6PSE, Co-Leader, VP8 Team XW, LAOS. Bruce, 3W3B (HS0ZCY/XU7ADF/XW1B/AA4XR), who lives in Da Nang, is once again active as XW4XR from Vientiane until mid-January. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using only CW and RTTY. QSL via E21EIC and LoTW. YJ, VANUATU (Reminder). Daniel, VK4AFU, is now active as YJ0AFU from Port Vila, Efate Island (OC-035, WLOTA 1051), until January 10th. Paul, N6PSE, sent out the following on January 7th: The VP8STI/VP8SGI Team is on the way to meet the Braveheart. Let the voyage begin! -- The VP8STI/VP8SGI team is now making their way to Stanley, The Falkland Islands for the eight day voyage to Southern Thule Island (South Sandwich). During our voyage, will be active as VP8IDX/MM. We will be making notes of propagation on each band. Our route will take us along the treacherous Drake Passage, known for rough seas and bad weather. We expect to land on Southern Thule Island (South Sandwich) and begin operations as VP8STI on January 18th. Upon completion of our mission, we will voyage three days to Husvik Bay, South Georgia where we expect to land and begin operations sometime on February 1st as VPGSGI. On February 14th, we will return to Stanley. We will operate as VP8IDX until February 19th. Look for us on 160 meters! Our goals are to operate fast and efficiently and to provide as many all-time new contacts with these rare entities. We will make the extra effort to work the most remote and difficult regions. All of our plans are going very well. We have raised 75% of the funds needed to complete our Dxpedition. We are very extremely grateful for all Foundation, Club and Individual support. We will make very limited updates to our website during the Dxpedition for this reason. New donors will be added once we return to Stanley in mid-February. We have enabled a new feature on our website where you can follow our progress and track our location: http://www.intrepid-dx.com/vp8/location.php We are very excited to be activating the #3 and #8 most wanted DXCC entities on a combined trip. You can view all details of our Dxpedition at: http://www.intrepid-dx.com/vp8 Please watch for updates and announcements in The Daily DX, DX-World, DX Coffee and DX News. When waves crash against cliffs water strikes up producing huge fountains reaching far inside shoreline, enormous power and low freq deep sound produced." During the week, the team was experiencing rain, hail, and heavy winds which collapsed one of the verticals and damaged antennas. Per ClubLog, as this was being written Sunday morning, the ZL9A team has made 5058 QSOs as of 1836z, January 8th. The ZL9A team also was still active on 30/20 meters (10111 and 14260 kHz). AX, AUSTRALIA (Australia's National Day). Jim, VK3PC, reports [edited]: The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) automatically allows all radio amateurs to substitute their normal VK Callsign prefix with the letters AX, every Australia Day. Our National Day this year falls on Tuesday, January 26th. This gives radio amateurs the chance to be part of the commemoration the First Fleet's arrival in 1788 at Sydney Gove and the establishment of a European settlement at Port Jackson, with the raising of the British flag by Governor Arthur Phillip. On Australia Day many celebrate our country and culture. This includes the granting of awards, honors and the welcoming to citizenship of many immigrants. National flags will be flown and the celebrations include fireworks displays. The AX prefix is popular among prefix hunters and others. The use of a special QSL card is encouraged by the Wireless Institute of Australia. The same alternative AX prefix applies on ANZAC Day, April 25th, and International Telecommunications Day, May 17th. The ARRL Web Site/Daily DX reported on January 12th: Tom Callas, KC0W, has announced the all-CW "Cows Over the World" DXpeditions for 2016. All callsign suffixes will contain "COW". The schedule calls for a summer departure to (in this order): American Samoa, Samoa, Tokelau, Solomon Islands, Temotu Province, and Bangladesh. He may add Nepal and Bhutan. There will be no time frame for operation from each entity. "The determining factor will be when the pileups die down it's time to pack everything up and move along", he said. Callas said he's spent months researching the absolute best DXing locations for each island and for Bangladesh (he's secured all but Tokelau). "This will be the only DX- pedition that I'm aware of in which the operator will operate from separate sides of the islands", he said. The Minnesota DXer pointed out that the west and east coasts of South Pacific islands are separated by mountains, and that he learned first-hand how much mountains attenuate HF signals while he was operating from Haiti. Emphasis will be on 160, 80, and 40 meters. A tentative phase II "Cows Over Africa" DXpedition is on the drawing board. http://www.arrl.org/news/cows-over-the-world-cw-dxpeditions-planned CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND (Update). The St. Paul Island DXpedition scheduled for August 19-29th, will have 9 operators: Murray/WA4DAN (Co-Leader), Randy/N0TG (Co-Leader), Will/AA4NC, Jay/K4ZLE, Bill/K5DHY, Wayne/K8LEE, John/N8AA, Aaron/VA1AXC and Phil/VA3QR. Activity and setup will be: Elecraft Transceivers and 500 Watt Amps. Operations on 160-6m, SSB, CW, and RTTY. Beams, Battlecreek Special (160), dedicated station for RTTY, and closely monitoring 12/10/6 meters for open band condx. Randy updated OPDX on January 15th: The official documentation granting permission for St. Paul operations has been issued. As always for DXpeditions, many details and documentation involved; the Canadian officials were kindly, professional and a pleasure to work with. We have begun gathering the many items required for the DXpedition operation. Firm arrangements for transport have been secured." The team continues to look for funds/donations due to the following as reported on January 1st: "One of the requirements for permission to access St. Paul is a very large Liability Insurance Policy. The dollar coverage size is large and finding an underwriter was a challenge. We are pleased to report that we now have the insurance policy paid for and in hand. This was a major challenge that team members worked diligently to accomplish." Those that have donated are listed on the Sponsor's list on the Web page at: http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/news--sponsors.html No amount is too small; all who donate will receive a QSL automatically without having to request one. The team is fully committed and investing significantly; your financial support will help and is appreciated more than words can express. The single most expensive item is the cost for the transportation to access the island. Donations can be made via this link: http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/donate.html For more details, visit their Web site often for updates as they develop at: http://www.CY9dxpedition.com DAYTON HAMVENTION NEWS.................. * 2016 DAYTON TOPBAND DINNER (27th Annual Event!) - Continuing the great Dayton Top Band Dinner tradition that George, K8GG, and George, W8UVZ, started, I am proud to announce the 27th Annual Dayton TopBand Dinner. The team is calling themselves the "Dipper DX". Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. The focus will be 160/80 meters. They reported on January 21st, on their Web page: "Focus areas! Besides the normal CW & SSB activity on higher bands, there will be a focus on low bands. VK9C is quite high up on the most wanted list when looking at 80M and 160M activity. We will pay attention to the difficult parts of the world from Cocos (Keeling) Islands. U.S. East Coast being almost the 'antipode' is probably the most difficult path with very short openings. Special attention will be given. Please respect when we say US EAST ONLY. Not only along the coastline, but 'East'. All others will be worked, when we are through the short openings. We have also received requests from South America to pay attention. Europe and Asia will have greater opportunities. We might focus on Central Asia and Central Russia as well. At those times we may ask Japan to stand by. Europe will be a challenge too. Working eastern Europe, and not hearing west or north Europe. Please also respect when we ask for West or northern Europe. And, please, do not call on top of stations being worked! This will slow down the QSO rate severely. RTTY will also receive attention. Want to get in the log? ? Follow the DX Code of Conduct!" QSL via their OQRS on ClubLog (preferred) or via their QSL Manager LA6OP, direct or by the Bureau. Log will be uploaded to the LoTW as soon as possible after the DXpedition. VP8STI SOUTH SANDWICH ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update)....... Since early this morning, we have been experiencing blizzard like conditions with strong winds and heavy snow fall. Some of our antennas have become damaged by the high winds and the snow fall is making access to them very difficult. It is also increasingly difficult to re-fuel our generators. Our biggest concern is our four tents, one of which has already been damaged by the high winds. We are in VHF communications with the Brave- heart and we are discussing contingency plans to abort or shorten the DXpedition if safety requires. The Braveheart is unable to maintain their anchor position and is moving out to sea. We are currently active on three stations however we are becoming increasingly less confident that we can maintain this activity. Please know that we are doing our best under extreme circum- stances to make contacts with the global DX Community. This DXpedition has thoroughly tested each member physically, mentally and spiritually. We pray for a safe return. We hope that we can continue however we feel the need to inform you that our activity may abruptly come to an end in the name of safety of our team and the crew of the Braveheart. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Mon Jan 25 09:33:00 2016 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Mon, 25 Jan 2016 09:33:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin #1250.2 Message-ID: <291520.51484.bm@smtp111.sbc.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1250.2 Ohio/Penn DX Special Bulletin No. 1250.2 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Special Bulletin No. 1250.2 BID: $OPDX.1250.2 January 25, 2016 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, and various sources and Web sites for the following DX information. VP8STI SOUTH SANDWICH ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update)....... Past night two tents and most of the yagis were destroyed by high winds. Both of their main tents collapsed partially and the team worked very hard through the night to save them. The Braveheart recorded winds of 70 mph (112 Kph). They are running only on 40 meters due antenna damage. Once they can assess damage they can determine whether they can proceed to South Georgia or not. Right now they are doing last QSO as VP8STI due they have asked the Braveheart to extract them when it?s possible. They regret that they have fallen short of their plans , however the team and crew safety is most important. VP8STI SOUTH SANDWICH ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Update 2200z)....... Today at 21:20 UTC, Nigel Jolly, Braveheart owner, declared an emergency and ordered to VP8STI team to cease all operations and return to the ship. A large ice flow that had broken away due last nights storm starts to block the entrance to the Bay where they were camped. There was strong potential for the ice flow to prevent Braveheart to get them. Team is now safely aboard the Braveheart and they are moving away from Southern Thule Is. All the equipment and personal gear is still on the island. They hope to return to camp site during next good weather window. FT4JA JUAN DE NOVA DXPEDITION (Press Release dated January 26th)[edited]: Thank you for your engagement! -- We are extremely happy to receive donations for our project. Everybody is now well aware that the countries of the Top 10 DXCC are not easy to activate, sometimes because of difficult access, sometimes because of the political situation or the extremely high budget required to organize an expedition. Juan de Nova has long been on the list of these islands activated reg- ularly by scientists, mostly members of the French meteorological agency and occasionally by soldiers. The last major activity was in 2003 from the nearby island of Europa. Almost 13 years of silence to an island in the Indian Ocean, close to other very common entities DXCC list. That's right, this little island is located about 100km from the western coast of Madagascar. So why is it complicated and expensive to go? Well, first of all, it's a question of authorization. Like other islands JDN is administered by the French Southern and Antarctic Lands prefecture, which is in charge of these territories. Most of them are classified as nature reserves to maintain these places as wild as possible. Moreover, it is no coincidence that these places are often considered reference (level 0) in terms of human impact. Millions of birds can breed and nest in peace, like turtles. It would be nonsensical to allow streaming missions. After our operation since 2014 Tromelin TAAF accepted our application for authorization, possibly because of mutual trust and positive relationships established during these years of preparation . For our part, we do our best not to be a "weight" to these people and ensure immediately take into account all the remarks and recommendations of the different services involved. From one place to the other, the constraints are different and we had to rethink a number of aspects of the operation. Air transport used in 2014 was not possible, mainly because of the volume and weight to carry. The assistance received (transport crates) for Tromelin was not possible this year. Therefore, we had to settle for maritime solution by soliciting a ship allowed to park in the lagoon and to transport our team and our equipment. With the various tourist taxes, this represents about 70% of the total budget. The cost of our energy independence is also important because we have to route multiple generators and proper electrical installation and motor fuel (10-15%). For an operation of this magnitude, these costs are difficult to compress, especially need respect us a precise schedule of load, which we will waive do not. On the other hand, we tried to best optimize our costs and makes as much as possible to use the material available from each of us or loaned by our generous sponsors. Although the team (10 operators) finance a good part of the expedition - which is quite logical, we launched an appeal to amateur radio associations around the world as well as from DX'ers. It is indisput- able that this mobilization has led to progress in the organization and that without it, our expedition would have remained at the planning stage. To you, contributors, sponsors or members of associations/clubs/founda- tions that help us, we take you hat off. However, it is important that the mobilization will continue on different continents to continue to support the team's efforts. We can only be proud and happy to so many brands of sympathy and generos- ity. Who says the Ham Spirit no longer existed?
