They will try to get the logs to ClubLog daily and also inform daily the band/frequency-plan for the next day. SSB will be the main mode, but they plan to do some CW as well. QSL via OH2YY or by the SRAL Bureau. 9X, RWANDA. Mike, SQ3PMM, and XYL are currently backpacking from various locations throughout Rwanda. He is active as 9X9MM on 80-10 meters using CW and SSB with a FT-857D and 100 watts. Most of his operations have been on 20/15 meters SSB and some slow CW. See QSL info on QRZ.com. Also visit their "Rainbow Truck" Web page at: http://www.rainbowtruck.pl C5, THE GAMBIA (Update). QRZ DX reports Pedro, ON7WP, has cancelled his C5WP operation because Brussels Airlines could not warrant the transport of all his luggage of their charity project on the feeder flight from Liege-Belgium to Frankfurt-Germany, where his Gambia flight was relocated because Brussels airport is still closed after the brutal massacre by ISIS Muslim fundamentalist. Brussels Airlines also did not allow him to take along his extra Pelicase with radio equipment. Pedro will keep us updated on his new trip. In the meantime, he will be active from Belgium on 60 meter as ON7WP. DXCC NEWS. If you have not heard, ARRL Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager/DXAC Staff Liaison, Dave, NN1N, (as well as ARRL DX Bulletin 13 ARLD013) informs OPDX that: The ARRL Awards Committee has voted to delete Kingman Reef (KH5K) from the DXCC List, effective 29 March, 2016. Kingman Reef will be added to the Deleted Entities List on 29 March, 2016. The total number of entities on the List will drop from 340 to 339. The deletion process is described in DXCC Rules Section II DXCC List Criteria, Part 5(a) Deletion Criteria: "An entity may be deleted from the List if it no longer satisfies the criteria under which it was added. However, if the entity continues to meet one or more currently existing rules, it will remain on the List." With respect to the previous paragraph's text, Kingman Reef's original addition by virtue of separate administration has changed (separate administration by the U.S. Navy has been removed), and the reef does not meet any current criteria to remain on the list. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service administers Kingman Reef and Palmyra Island. The reef is too close to Palmyra Island to count as a separate entity. The reef is now considered part of the Palmyra/Jarvis DXCC entity. DXCC members who have affirmed credit with Kingman Reef will see their current entity totals drop by one on their DXCC awards -- including on the bands and modes where Kingman Reef credit is given. They will also see their DXCC Challenge totals drop commensurately. Honor Roll status will now be attainable after confirming 330 entities on the DXCC List. DXCC NEWS. Dave, NN1N, ARRL Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager/DXAC Staff Liaison, reports that the following have been approved for DXCC credit: *P5/3Z9DX -- Democratic People?s Republic of North Korea; 2015 operation ZA/IW2JOP -- Albania; All operations * For more details on the P5/3Z9DX approval, see the following on the ARRL Web Page: http://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-okays-p5-3z9dx-north-korea-operation-for-dxcc FT4JA JUAN DE NOVA DXPEDITION NEWS. The following press releases were posted by the FT4JA team: * March 31st [edited]: "Hello from Juan de Nova! -- After our trip by boat the finally anchored nearby the lagoon entrance. It took a complete day to bring all equipment ashore, dealing with low and high tides in the lagoon. We built the radio camp and antennas under extreme conditions. No wind at all during those first days. On night time, the temperature doesn't really decrease and we have thousands of mosquitoes showing up, looking for fresh meat. Hopefully the two tents are well done. The sea is close but very warm, with sharks coming very close to the sea shore. Prior to the expedition, we worked with satellite pictures. We met on the island a configuration slightly different than expected but we have been able to set-up all antennas as planned. The field around the camp is not a soccer field but rather a place with high bushes (arbustes, broussailles in French) that makes any move a challenge! In addition, there's spider as big a man hand everywhere. That's Juan de Nova! Mean- while, the lagoon and sky colors are just amazing! We started the operation yesterday around 1230 utc. We worked with as many station as possible around the clock, depending of the operators shifts. The life camp is located a mile away from the shacks. During the first 24h, we did a bit more than 10K qso. The first batch has been send to Clublog and should be visible on the online-log soon. Conditions are not too bad. We are meting a propagation close to our predictions. We always keep an eye on the planning not to miss any opening toward the "difficult regions of the globe". We ran on 160 and 80m without any RX antennas but we should have them tonight to cover all parts of the world. The 6m beacon is active. Do not hesitate to drop a mail to our pilot if you have informations to forward to the team. We are in touch through the BGAN terminal or via radio. The team is now focused on the pile-up. Thanks for your co-operation, see you on the bands! .... 73, FT4JA Team" * April 2nd: "New report from Juan de Nova: lifestyle, pileup and RX" -- Day 4 and first week-end. We have now entered in the daily routine of the dxpedition : operating, eating, sleeping. During the 3 first days we kept a daily rate over the 10K QSO. Up to seven stations are on the air simultaneously. It is not possible of course to keep them all the time active with 10 ops. We are managing operator?s shifts to activate as many of them during best propagation period. Like Tromelin in 2014, the best band seems to be the 15m. We try to keep one station on SSB and one on CW to maximize the chances and increase the number of unique callsigns. As expected, Europe is the most simple continent to work from here. We are doing our best to listen for Asia, Oc?ania and Americas every time the propagation allows contacts. Please do not hesitate to report informations to our pilots if needed. We improved a bit the RX system for 80/160m but there?s still an issue in EU/NA direction. 2 phased pennants and reversible beverages have been installed. The one in direction of Japan is working fine. Already 800 stations have been logged on Top Band. We moved slightly our TX frequency because many reports have been received to complain about ? fishing beacons ? on 1820.5. Check around 1821 kHz. Few words about the life on the island. The radio camp consists of two tents on the north beach. The life camp is 25 minutes walk away on the southern part of the island. We are trying to minimize our moves as much as possible because with heat and mosquitoes, all is complicated!" Just a reminder, operations will continue until April 11th. QSL FT4JA via F5CWU, ClubLog's OQRS (recommended) or LoTW. After the end of the operation, you can order either a Bureau or direct QSL card using the OQRS provided by ClubLog. However, the team reported on April 2nd: "From early in the conception of this project we planned to activate two sites, a main location with all bands at Atlas Cove, and a limited operation for a short period from Spit Bay on the other side of Heard Island. The Spit Bay operation was designed to improve our ability to make contacts to western and central North America, which from Atlas Cove is the other side of Big Ben, the 9000-foot volcano in the center of Heard Island. However, now that the operation from Atlas Cove is well underway, we are finding good openings to the west coast on many bands. We are VERY aware of the areas that still have a huge need ? and will work hard to work you in these areas. Furthermore, Matt, the captain of the Braveheart, has been looking for a reasonably safe weather opportunity to land and deploy a radio team at Spit Bay, but so far we have not had one. As we enter the second half of the expedition, we have to consider what will be the most productive strategy, and it seems to us that continuing the operation with a full complement of operators from the Atlas Cove location will be more effective than dispatching part of the team to Spit with uncertain weather openings. Please use our support team to inform us of propagation windows we might be missing so that you can get your ATNO. They will analyze this input and where they see trends they will pass it on to the operating team." Here is a list of several important/interesting press releases that were again sent out and posted on their Web page over past week. This includes many pictures being posted. PAUL ISLAND DXPEDITION (Update). The following update was posted on the CY9C Web page on April 5th [edited]: We have decided to setup "two" sites. One will be on the Northeast point, a separate island where the lighthouse is located; the second site is the more traditional site for DXpeditions known as Atlantic Cove. The distance between sites will max- imize the ability to operate two stations simultaneously on the same band. Many times there will be a CW/RTTY and SSB operating on the same band. Have you viewed the AERIAL Fly-over? http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/dxpedition-site.html ADDED NOTES: Also, take a look and fill out "NEED" SURVEY on their website at: http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/need-survey.html A serious effort is being planned to address those specific needs. SUPPORT DONATIONS: A special "thank you" to donors is listed on their Web page that contributed financially to the DXpedition. All pre-DXpedition donors that work them will receive a QSL automatically without any request required. Every donation is significant....none is too small. Thank you for considering to assist the DXpedition. The single most expensive item is the cost for the transportation to access the island. Donations can be made Via this link: http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/donate.html (If desired, more details / info on this matter, contact: N0TG - E-mail address per QRZ.com). QSL INFORMATION: There are several methods to QSL. It is recommended to use Club's OQRS. For more details on QSLing, see: http://www.cy9dxpedition.com/qsl-info.html E5, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS. By the time you read this, the FT4JA DXpedition should be QRT or coming to a close (QRT April 10th, departure on the 11th). The latest Press Release: * April 7th (Thursday) - Good propagation is back again on high bands, and that is of course excellent news! We are keeping as many stations on air on the opened bands, staying until they close. We had excellent runs with NA west coast on different bands; we will continue to focus on difficult areas. Unfortunately, we will have to work on the dismantelling plan to match with the necessary high tide. Depending on the high wind these days this might makes things difficult for loading/unloading things with the zodiac - we?ll keep fingers crossed We plan to leave the island next Monday. More info with the remaining antennas day by day soon. Operators are tired by the long radio shifts and high temperature but are all still giving their best to put everyone in the log. We really appreciate the cooperation of everyone when we ask to QRX to give a chance to a special area. The next weekend we will concentrate on the band/modes with the most QSOs in the log to give all a last opportunity for an ATNO. QSL FT4JA via F5CWU, ClubLog's OQRS (recommended) or LoTW. After the end of the operation, you can order either a Bureau or direct QSL card using the OQRS provided by ClubLog. As this was being written Saturday night, the FT4JA team made 92232 QSOs with 22947 Unique callsigns per ClubLog as of 2054z, April 8th: http://www.juandenovadx.com/en/online-log/ https://secure.clublog.org/logsearch/FT4JA Breakdown by modes are 18364/CW, 18275/SSB, and 3958/RTTY. SEANET TO BE REACTIVATED (Press Release). [edited] The Southeast Asia Net (SEANET) will be reactivated next week by the members of RAST, Thailand's National Amateur Radio Society. Beginning on Monday, April 11th, a Thai net control station will invite stations to check into SEANET from across the Southeast Asian region on 14.320 MHz from 1200z (7 p.m. in Bangkok and Jakarta) onwards. Subsequently, the net will be conducted twice a week, every Monday and Friday, when a Thai net control station will invite stations around the region to check in on a country-by-country basis. Later this year the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand under the patronage of His Majesty the King (RAST) will host the 2016 SEANET Convention in Pattaya, a popular beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand, from November 18-21st, and RAST President Jakkree Hantongkom (Jack), HS1FVL, along with directors of the society believe that it is important to ensure that the net on 20 meters continues to be conducted regularly. Amateur radio stations anywhere in the world are welcome to check into SEANET, whose main role is to be on standby to handle any medical or emergency traffic. In the past SEANET has helped sailors and crew members on yachts in distress while also serving as a guide to propagation conditions and being a meeting point for hams in the region where they can meet friends before QSYing away from the net frequency for a QSO. SEANET began operating on 14.320 MHz in late 1963 and the first SEANET Convention was held in Penang in 1971. Since then the convention has been an annual event while the net had been manned by volunteer net control stations from around the region. However, the net activity had declined and the it no longer meets regularly and this initiative by RAST hopes to redress this by conducting the net at least twice a week. It is still possible to register to attend the 44th SEANET Convention in Pattaya and full information can be found at the SEANET 2016 website: http://www.seanet2016.com Any amateur radio station can check into the net and the net control operator begins by calling for check-ins from countries in Southeast Asia, followed by elsewhere in Asia and the Pacific, then in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North, Central and South America. For more information about RAST and amateur radio in Thailand, please check out the English-language website while there is also a website in Thai . Sincerely and 73 de Tony Waltham, HS0ZDX -- Vice President, RAST TC2016, TURKEY (Special Event). The latest news as this was being written: * Status Update: Final Weekend by KY6R (2016-04-09 09:11:40z): Bad weather has begun to set in, and is likely to be here for a while. With our departure coming soon, this means that teardown is beginning. We will try to stay on the air as long as possible, but may have a reduced number of stations on the air, and a reduced complement of antennas to use. Watch DXA to see where our stations are operating. We will post updates as they become available, but everyone is busy here, either working the pileups or packing things up. Please listen to operator instructions---if they are calling for all-time new ones and you have us in the log, please stand by. At 0900z, the sky was overcast with a light wintry mix of precipitation falling (snow/graupel/ drizzle). The temperature was 2 C, sustained winds at or in excess of 30 kts, and a pressure of 968 mbar. * Status Update: by KY6R (2016-04-09 14:31:04z): We've begun disassembling the antennas in anticipation of our impending departure. Our 80 meter operations have concluded. On 40 meters, we have gone from having a 4-square to a vertical. If you've seen the pictures of the partially- flooded area in which our low-band antennas are placed, you may have thought it was foreshadowing something, and you would be correct. Today, in high winds (>30 kt), light drizzle/snow/graupel, and water up to the middle of the shins, our intrepid crew recovered and disassembled the 80 meter vertical and 40 meter 4-square. Tonight, we're celebrating the birthday of Alan (VK6CW, VK0LD). As we were blowing up balloons to celebrate, a few CW contacts were made between squeaking balloons. Despite the cold and wind outside, all is well here in the tents. At 1400z it was partly cloudy (4 octas), the temperature was 3 C, strong westerly winds, and the pressure had risen to 978 mbar. Press Release April 15th (We were ready!): The entire FT4JA team is now safe back in Mayotte after 2 days on the sea. Just a bit more than 2 weeks ago we were arriving on Juan de Nova. A French island in the middle of the Mozambique Channel. It took us one and a half day to set-up our camp: shelters, generators, antennas, stations. We started our operations in the afternoon of March 30th. Immediately, all stations were on the air and the pileups were big, as expected! As planned, we did not waste one minute and we started following the propagation plan to give everyone a chance. Orienting the pileup by area was not too difficult and almost everyone was collaborating, understanding the propagation rules. With only 10 op to manage radios and the life at the camp, we achieved to keep a 10 000 qsos per day rate! We did not slept much! Thanks to a good setup, and been on right frequency at the right time, even the most difficult areas to contact got their chances. We had long runs with NA west coast with huge signals on many bands, as well as VK/ZL area. It was not a surprise to get the longer and stronger openings with EU and JA. People in AF and SA got also opportunities. The home-made VDA antennas on high band performed very well one more time, giving us excellent signals. They were even over performing at high tide! The low band setup performed pretty well. As usual finding a good com- promise for receiving on 80-160 required a couple of days. We spent hours trying to improve the systems and make changes up to a reliable solution. The noise level is this areas was often very high, with lightnings over the ocean every nights. It seams that the top band signal was quite strong everywhere that everyone thought he should be heard easily by FT4JA. Keep in mind that it?s a two way radio contact and that your signal should reach the DX station too ! By the way, 2331 qso on 160 and 3523 on 80 seams a good result. Conditions on Juan de Nova have been very difficult, sometimes dangerous for the health of ops. Temperature were incredibly high, sometimes with no wind at all. Even the water of the lagoon was so hot that is was useless to refresh ops! Swimming sessions were very limited due to the presence of sharks that are never very far from the shore. We had quite a long walk between the radio and life camp, involving 12 hours shifts. Some days we had to face storms that damage antennas or generators shelter, requiring lot of work by ops to fix things without interrupting the operation. All the equipment ran under hard conditions but we didn?t got a single failure. Once more, we have been impressed by the Elecraft K3. The addition of the new SPE Expert 1.3 amplifiers appears to be an excellent choice. None of them even turn on protection once. All others parts and accessories supplied by Spiderbeam, Messi & Paolini, Dx Engineening/KD9SV, Microham, Modmic, SunSDR, GM0OBX cables did a wonderful job and have contributed to the success of the operation. We managed to keep good rates, and stay focused on the propagation to give a chance to everyone. 25 156 unique calls is a satisfaction even if we regret that some of you have not been able to come through. Even stations with a very small setup have been able to make a contact. In addition to the amateur radio aspects, we were concerned by the pre- servation of the nature and environment. We will explain later all the actions conducted all along the operation. The island was left exactly like it was when we arrived. That should be, and that is really a priority is our hamradio DXpeditions. As you know, the OQRS system has been turned on. We highly recommend you to use it for your qsl cards request. As a reminder, we will use a special envelop and stamps, like we did for Tromelin. Do not hesitate to add a donation, even a small one, to help us to balance the cost of the project. We will design the card in the coming days and print it as soon as pos- sible. LoTW upload will be done after the first batch of corrections. FT4JA is now QRT with 105,570 is the log. We sincerely hope you had the same pleasure as us in that adventure. Thank you for all your kind emails and comments. We?ll probably not be able to reply to all of them but let us tell you THANK YOU! This is not over, we still have to get all the equipment back in France, work on articles, video. Team members will try to come and tell you our story in different conventions, meetings, etc. This project was made possible thanks to TAAF. Not only for all author- izations, but also for all the help and support provided from the begin- ning to the end of the project. They have a very important mission in protecting this islands. Let?s hope, that through our amateur radio ex- peditions we can continue to support their actions. See you soon! Where are we going next? QSL FT4JA via F5CWU, ClubLog's OQRS (recommended) or LoTW. The OQRS is now active on ClubLog and you can order either a Bureau or direct QSL card. This method is by far the most simple way to proceed without having to send your own paper QSL! Randy, N0TG, reports the following on April 16th: As was reported previously, we will have two separate sites...separated approximately 1.5 miles. Site 1 will be the Atlantic Cove site with 6 operators. We will try to keep 4-5 radios running and more if 12/10m opens. Our plan is to have a RTTY station active at all times. From this site 160 will be given lots of attention with the Battle Creek Special antenna. Site 2 - the Northeast Point separate island will be enhanced to include 4 -5 operators active at all times, thus the dxpedition in total can potentially have 8-10 radios working most of the time. We are seriously considering 6m EME and Satellite, however, we need to work out the planning details. And, as always, budget matters are a significant consideration as we expand operations. We appreciate the support by many to date. The desire is to make this a very complete operation that will offer fun and meeting needs for all interests.
