DX MEETING IN ROME & HV0A IN THE SPOTLIGHT OCTOBER 10-11th (News release from the Eternal City - Vatican City, Rome) [edited]. Saturday, October 3rd, 2015 -- Francesco/IK0FVC, Martti/OH2BH and Giordano/IK0XFD, President of the Rome branch of Associazione Radioamatori Italiani (ARI), are organizing a DX summit in the Eternal City, Rome. The historically rich surroundings help to spotlight several timely issues on the way to the first DX University session to be organized in Italy. During this event, HV0A is to be activated on several bands, as high as permitted by the Solar Flux. The activity will begin on Saturday, October 10th, at 1400 UTC and finish with a dinner party at 1800 UTC featuring a talk given by Martti, OH2BH. Further HV0A activity will follow the next day, October 11th. Martti's presentation will highlight the challenges faced in making DXpedition traffic run smoothly, with both ends contributing to a good result. The gathering will focus on areas of improvement which are of interest to DXers and DXpedition operators alike. These areas include a DX University paper tentatively entitled ?How To Work Everything With No Pain ? Even Europe.? The paper is scheduled to be released shortly. The centerpiece of the summit is the unveiling of a new Q-Code. The TX3X DXpedition currently underway will be used as a case study and part of the Italian DX summit. (S79C Press Release #3) During early July, plans started to firm up for a DXpedition to Coetivy Island AF-119NEW. Such was the interest in this project, our experienced team was in place within moments of invitations going out to join this exciting island activation. In little more than 6 weeks from now, the S79C team will be on air from the South Indian Ocean looking to work as many uniques as possible. Planning and logistics are now complete and we're confident of giving out this new IOTA group to many. We are deeply encouraged by the level of support, both individ- ually and through organizations who realize this IOTA activity is not a holiday style operation, but rather to a remote destination hundreds of miles from anywhere. Our aim is to work all corners of the globe using a combination of verticals and hexbeams placed near the waters edge. This November time-frame was chosen to max- imize propagation paths to all geographical areas. We want your QSO! Our most difficult path from this Brand New IOTA group is to West Coast North America. Special attention will be given to this area as we realize that even regular S7 is still much needed - # 53 most wanted DXCC in fact! We are puzzled however, that to date, all groups and organizations contacted from this area have all refused our funding requests. Nonetheless, we will focus on this tricky path during peak propagation times. Let's remember the 'forgotten West Coast'. Such is the extreme expense of activating this brand new IOTA, we appreciate every single donation being made. We urge those considering to donate to please do so before, during or after our DXpedition. Remember, advance donors will be rewarded with a free QSL ( see ) Just before we leave our homes in mid-November we will issue a last minute update. In addition, twitter @af119 will be in use as we journey to Coetivy island. Please see for latest information. Thank you, Team S79C AS-128. Operators Kunio/JA8VE and Hiro/JF1OCQ will be active as 3W4VE and 3W4VX, respectively, from Phu Qoc Island between November 4-11th. Activity will be holiday style on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and RTTY. QSL via their home callsigns. NP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. Yuriy, N2TTA, will once again be active from here as NP2P during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 24-25th) as a Single- Op/All-Band/Low-Power entry. QSL via LoTW. NP2, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS. Fred, K9VV, will be active as NP2X from the "Caribbean Friends United By Amateur Radio" Gallows Bay Club Station on St. Croix during the CQWW DX SSB Contest (October 24-25th) as a Single- Op/All-Band entry. George, K8GG, reports the following: "I took QSL cards for DXCC updates for myself and others to W9DXCC. The cards were checked on Saturday, Sept 12th, processed at ARRL HQ, postmarked Sept.22nd, and the endorsements were received by all of us via USPS on Saturday, Sept 26th. Some of them were totally hand written, others were done electronically on the DXCC site within ARRL dot org. I think two weeks total turn around is great! I am very happy that the DXCC desk is not backlogged! I heard similar turn-around times from some Wisconsin hams who had cards checked in Milwaukee over the summer. Similarly, I took some QSLs for 5BWAZ and a single band WAZ to W9DXCC and they were all processed and double checked, including a mailed sub- mittal to John Bergman, KC5LK, the new WAZ administrator, in 2-1/2 weeks as well. The wind continues to blow. If you imagine being in a wind tunnel with a wind speed between 20 - 30 knots, and occasional stronger gusts you'll understand the challenges. Wind and tent noise makes it difficult to hear, even with cans, so we apologize for repeats. Sleeping is difficult because the tents are shaking. The pile-ups are energetic and orderly, THANK YOU. The team continues to be in good spirits and dealing with the situation as you would expect. Safety is a priority - we're being overly cautious when it comes to taking chances with antennas. Today we installed the 2 SteppIR beams and tried to install the Battle Creek Special but the winds were too strong to complete the installation, The SteppIR are withstanding the wind and working well. The tents are holding up well, the very deep sand requires us to pay constant attention to all guy wires and ground stakes.Placing 50 pound (22 kg) sand bags at the most critical guy points has helped immensely. Because of the rough seas the skipper will bring supplies to the island 2 times per day until the sea calms down. We are hoping for a break in the weather in 24 hours. Being on a tropical island you may not think about it being cold, but tonight it is cooling down and we're all wearing layers and jackets, however there has been very little rain. The bands are in good condition, with excellent runs to all geography, we've had excellent openings and hope propagation continues to be favorable. Team Chesterfield 2015 V3, BELIZE. [edited] Callsign for Palmyra 2016 announced! -- After many months of planning, securing permits and negotiating contracts with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Nature Conservancy, we are quickly approaching the much anticipated DX- pedition to Palmyra, KH5-P. The Team is excited to be able to activate this much needed entity. Palmyra ranks in the top ten of the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe! Palmyra 2016 call is K5P! Co-leaders Craig/K9CT and Lou/N2TU, have formed a very experienced, highly qualified Team of 12 operators and plan to operate five stations over a 14 day period, January 11th through January 26th, 2016. Palmyra (KH5) ranks #9 on the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe. As with other DXpeditions of this magnitude, this is an expensive ad- venture. Location, transportation, island costs, and other logistics make Palmyra a costly operation. Critical to major DXpeditions are the immediate, up-front commitment costs. Before the DXpedition begins, all equipment must be secured, pre- tested, and shipped to Hawaii where it will then be organized for forwarding to Palmyra. The DX community has been very supportive of this much needed DXCC operation however, we are requesting additional financial support. We have a large payment due on November 1, and are short of our commitments. No matter how large or small the donation, every bit helps. Please do not wait until the operation is completed; most of the expenses are up-front and your support is urgently required now. Future permission to operate on Palmyra Atoll may not happen for many years as access is severely restricted. Please visit our Palmyra2016 website to make your donation at: http://palmyra2016.org/pages/sponsors.html 73, Lou/N2TU and Craig/K9CT P4, ARUBA. Press release dated October 10th [edited]: Islands on the Air (IOTA) celebrated its 50th anniversary as a premier DX program in July 2014. The last fifty years have seen the program grow to 2,500 active island chasers and approximately 15,000 more casual participants. It is perhaps second in scale and scope to the DXCC award; indeed, many would argue it is even more challenging than that program. Last year the Society?s Board identified a number of challenges that the program faced, not least of which was the need to provide an IT system that would allow online island credit submission akin to Logbook of the World (LoTW). Since that time, a small group of IOTA enthusiasts has been working with the Society to ensure that the IOTA program continues to grow and play the prominent role that it has done in Amateur Radio DXing and contest activity for the last fifty years. That work has now come to fruition and we are pleased to announce that a new organization will be formed, to be called the IOTA Foundation. It will be run by IOTA enthusiasts and will manage the IOTA program in part- nership with the Society. One major task for the new organization will be to develop a new online credit system that is due to be completed in 2017. Roger Balister, G3KMA, Bob Barden, MD0CCE, Cezar Trifu, VE3LYC and Johan Willemsen, PA3EXX, are the team who will implement the IT changes and form the IOTA Foundation, with representation from radio amateurs at home and abroad....... On October 14th, 15th, and 17th, the TX3X team sent out the following: * On the morning of 12 Oct we got a break in the weather and were able to dismantle the camps in about 3 hours and get the equipment back to the boat. It took several more hours to store everything and prepare to get under way. At 2PM local we set sail for Noumea and quickly found ourselves in very windy conditions and "confused seas". With 2 - 3 meter seas, coming at us from different directions and heavy winds the boat and passengers took a significant beating. On the night of 14 Oct the skipper decided to take the boat to the port of Koumac, New Caledonia. The weather forecast indicates conditions will get only worse and the risk of trying to make Noumea wasn't worth taking. We are currently in Koumac, the plan is to find alternate transpor- tation to Noumea today. We'll upload the last of the logs today. I know there are many e-mails asking about contacts and busted calls. We'll begin the process of working through the NiL and busted calls when we're near a reliable internet connection. This will probably not be until 19 Oct. The boat will return to Auckland where the Advance Team will unload the equipment and turn it over the customs broker.... Team Chesterfield DX-pedition * 15 Oct 4PM local -- Half the team arrived back in Noumea after a 6 hour bus ride. The others will arrive in about 3 hours. One intrepid DXer decided to ride the boat back to Noumea, he will arrive sometime in the night. Everyone is in good health, a few bumps and bruises, but nothing serious. Dr. Arnie tended to everyone in the highest traditions of the medical profession, especially when it came to dispensing medications for motion sickness. There are hundreds of e-mails asking for a "log check". I'm sure you realize this requires a solid Internet connection, which we don't have at the hotel, and many hours of someone's time to research. All the logs have been uploaded to the server. Team Chesterfield * Saturday 17 Oct. -- The boat arrived in Noumea on Friday afternoon, Arnie, N6HC, rode the boat till the bitter end. The skipper reported the ride was a rough one. Arnie looked fine, with a big smile on his face, happy to have had the total sailing experience. The logs are uploaded and OQRS is operational at . We appreciate the kind words we're receiving in e-mails and on the forums. The donations coming in through OQRS and via the "Donate" button at will help offset the project cost. We know several areas are having trouble getting to the website, the domain registrar is investigating the issue. The incorrectly logged PSK31 contacts were corrected. We are receiving your e-mails regarding busted calls and "Not" in Log situations, they will each be investigated when we have stable and fast Internet con- nections, this process will take time. Please do NOT send multiple e-mails for the same problem or write a long explanation of the problem, just include the specifics of the contact(s) in question. On the first day we had a significant web site outage caused by our web hosting supplier, you all saw the effects. With the help of John Miller, K6MM, the web hosting supplier restored our service. Over the next 48 hours the team members will begin their long journey home. The boat will return to Auckland, New Zealand where we will off- load the equipment and arrange for its return to the USA. A top priority of the DX-pedition organizers is to get everyone home safely and in good health. Other than a few scrapes and bruises (and some motion sickness) we're happy to report we met that goal. Thanks to the DX community for your understanding, we were happy to provide all the new ones and band fills. Team Chesterfield Islands DX-pedition V7, MARSHALL ISLANDS (Update to OPDX.1228/1233). Paul, N6PSE, sent out the following on October 15th [edited]: "An appeal from the VP8STI and VP8SGI Team" -- The activations of South Sandwich and South Georgia Islands as VP8STI and VP8SGI in January-February 2016 are the next major Dxpeditions to take place. The decision to activate VP8-South Sandwich and VP8-South Georgia was made upon seeing how well FT4TA, FT5ZM and K1N were funded. That gave us the confidence to go forward activating these two rare and remote islands on the same trip. We are now finding ourselves with a signi- ficant funding shortfall. By adding South Georgia to our itinerary we added fifteen days at $8,000 per day or $120,000 onto the cost to activate South Sandwich. Our analysis of our funding shows us that while our individual donations have exceeded all expectations, our club donations have not. We are seeing that many Clubs that gave FT5ZM or K1N $1000-$2000 are giving us $500 or a fraction of what they gave to these other Dxpeditions. Some clubs have decided not to make any donation to us that gave quite generously to other recent Dxpeditions. While we appreciate each and every donation, we can tell you that a Club donation to us of $500 amounts to a donation of $250 for the activation of each of these rare and remote islands. With a budget of $425,000 we are making small incremental steps when leaps and bounds are needed. As you know, upfront donations are critical for a Dxpeditions success. Each member of the Intrepid DX Group has contributed $15,000 of their personal funds to move the VP8STI-South Sandwich and VP8 South Georgia Dxpeditions forward. These are two ten day Dxpeditions to two top ten DXCC entities back to back. (#3 and #8) To date, we have raised $142,000 above the team contribution of $210,000. We still have a deficit of $73,000 that we need to fill as much as we can. It is only through the generosity of Club donations such as yours that we can make this DXpedition possible. We would love to realize sufficient support so that the Intrepid-DX Group could plan the future activation of another top five island entity after the VP8STI/VP8SGI Dxpedition. Without sufficient funding, we cannot make those kinds of plans for the future. At this time, we are asking for those Foundations and Clubs that have not yet made a donation to please consider doing so. We cannot make it there on our own. Please watch for updates and announcements on The Daily DX, DX-World, DX Coffee and DX News. We hope that you will consider a donation today. Thank you, Paul, N6PSE, Co-Leader, VP8 Team VP9, BERMUDA. FT4JA, JUAN DE NOVA DXPEDITION NEWS. Press release dated October 22nd [edited]: FT4JA is your expedition! By supporting the Juan de Nova 2016 project you become in some ways a team member and as such it seems essent- ial to us to share with you the preparation for the operation. We are happy to announce that our tenth operator recently made it offic- ial that he will participate in the operation. We are talking about Di?go, F4HAU. Our team of pilots is also ready. It will be managed by Cedric, F5UKW, who will summarize the requests and comments received by "regional relays" who are: N5FG (NA/SA), ON9CFG (EU/AF), JJ3PRT (AS/OC). They will be the people to talk to before and during the expedition. We rely on you to provide them with relevant information to refine our propagation pre- dictions and organize our traffic. On the island, we will have a satellite connection. Although this set up is expensive, we consider it necessary to offer different services: online log, photos, news, correspondence with the pilots. Exchanges in this way will however be limited to the strict minimum in order not to increase the budget, already very tight. The experience of our operation from Tromelin (FT4TA) is of course a tremendous asset. We have long debated the strengths and room for improve- ment. Although returns were extremely positive, we carefully recorded comments and remarks to strive for an even better user experience and close to your expectations. The relationship of trust with the authorities allows us to involve a greater number of operators for a longer duration to maximize the chances of contact with Juan de Nova. With the support of several sponsors, we also develop our equipment to have more flexibility in traffic and satisfy the greatest number: a second set of VDA on some bands, improved RX system, more stations available. It is clear that our budget is harder to reach because of the numerous major operations over a short period of time. Let?s not forget that most of the expenditures are made before departure. Therefore, it is essential that the mobilization continue so that the Dxpedition can take place. We count on your support and that of your clubs and associations. Each donation brings us one step closer to Juan de Nova. Let?s hope that all DXers ??will in turn invest in the project. It is never too late and every donation, whatever the amount, is important. STANDARD TIME. Remember to change your clocks next weekend! Countries who observe Daylight Saving Time (DST), which took place on Sunday, March 8th, are now expected to move their "local clocks" backward 1 hour on Sunday, November 1st, from 2:00 AM local time to 1:00 AM. In 2016, Day- light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on Sunday, March 13th, at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about ST and DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2015.html ADDED NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know NOT to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs.
