Wolf Harranth, OE1WHC, from the Amateur Radio Section of ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) and the Documentary Archives Radio Communications/QSL Collection, have sent OPDX the following Press Release, dated February 9th, 1300z [edited]: "A Sat-Phone interview with Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, co-team leader of the current K1N Navassa DXpedition" -- In an exclusive interview for Vienna- based Documentary Archive Radio Communications (DokuFunk), Glenn sums up the team's experience so far, gives some advice on how to cooperate, and discloses all plans for the remaining days of operation. Audio file is available at: http://www.dokufunk.org/navassa-e In short, Glenn states in the interview that the K1N operation will continue, but on Friday they will start closing down. The team will start by sending their unneeded supplies back to Jamaica. On Saturday, the K1N operations will still be on the air, but some of the personnel will begin to leave the island. All radio equipment will remain on the island until daybreak Sunday, where K1N operations will then go QRT. OOOPPPSSS DEPARTMENT! There are two typos in OPDX.1201. Under "AAW NEWS", the callsign "K0ZG" should read "K0ZP". Under "E6, NIUE", the callsign "E6NZ" should read "E6NK". VK0EK HEARD ISLAND DXPEDITION (Press Release). Richard, KY6R, writes: "Heard Island Now The Longest Inactive Entity on the DXCC List!" No other entity in the Top 10 lists have been inactive longer than Heard Island! Heard Island was last activated in 1997, so that was 18 years ago. Navassa is on the air now, Bouvet was activated in 2008, North Korea in 2002, South Sandwich and South Georgia in 2002, Crozet in 2009, Scarborough Reef in 2007, Tromelin in 2014, Kingman Reef in 2000, Palmyra in 2005, Pratas in 2003, Juan de Nova/Europa in 2003. Heard Island is the "next up" as far as top 10 Most Wanted entities in the DXCC Program's entity list. After K1N is over, Heard Island will rise up to #4 in the DX Publications Most Wanted List ? but this is of course always subject to change due to those who participate in the poll each year - See DXPUB_MOST_WANTED at: http://www.dxpub.net/MOST-WANTED-SURVEY.html And will be #5 in the Clublog Most Wanted List ? and this also changes based on those who upload their log files - See ClubLog_most_wanted at: http://www.clublog.org/mostwanted.php The DX Publications survey was done in October, 2014, and since then, Tromelin, and now Navassa have been activated. Only Navassa affects the Heard Island position in this survey, and in fact also in the Clublog list. While both of these "surveys" are subject to all kinds of variables, DX-pedition leaders do look at these when considering where they might go next ? so they are useful. And they are fun for DX-ers to "dream and scheme" as far as thinking about that next big ATNO! VP8/G & VP8/SS, SOUTH GEORGIA AND SOUTHSANDWICH ISLANDS (Press Release): Dear friends of the DX Community: The Intrepid-DX Group announced our plans to activate South Sandwich and South Georgia in mid-December. With the activation of Navassa, these Islands become the #3 and #8 most wanted entities world-wide. The activation of these two rare islands will be very expensive. The 14 team members are contributing $210,000 towards the $425,000 total cost of the DXpedition. The team has a critical decision to make. We have a non-refundable deposit of $54,000 due to pay for our vessel charter. We fully intend to go forward with our plans however we need indications from the global DX Community that you support our plans. While we are pleased with the support of some individuals and a few clubs so far, we are now asking those of you who have not yet done so to please consider donating to our fund, or pledge a donation. We ask that the DX Clubs and Associations of the global DX community lend us their support. We must feel confident that we can successfully raise enough funds for this exciting endeavor before we can commit to the non-refundable charter deposit. You can see how to make a donation here: http://www.intrepid-dx.com/vp8/sponsors.php If you cannot donate at this time, but wish to make a pledge, please let us know: intrepiddxgroup at gmail.com If you wish your donation to be US tax deductible, consider making a directed donation through the Northern California DX Foundation: http://www.ncdxf.org Without significant support from the global DX Community, we will not be able to go forward with our plans. Corporate Sponsors: Signing on as a sponsor is: DX-Engineering DX-Engineering has been a long time sponsor of DX-peditions and the DX community. Several other firms have offered their products and services. As we work through the equipment requirements we?ll submit our require- ments to these generous potential sponsors. Fundraising: We kicked off our fund raising activities on January 18th. We're pleased to report significant contributions from the: Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF), Oceania DX Group (ODXG), International DX Association (INDEXA), German DX Foundation (GDXF) and the UK DX Foundation (CDXC). To date we also received support from: Lone Star DX Association, LA DX Group, Mediterraneo DX Club, Danish DX Group, Long Island DX Association, Nippon DX, and the Lynx DX Group. We appreciate these early supporters of the project, and of course, we appreciate the support from our individual donors. Log Search ? OQRS Software Project: Our software has been updated with the latest (and final) enhancements with regression testing underway. The user interface will look familiar to anyone that has ever used an OQRS application. The QSL management back end functions are working as designed and will significantly reduce the labor associated with pro- cessing OQRS, Direct and Buro requests, including LoTW. We have a list of additional enhancements that will be considered after the TX3X project. Chesterfield Islands Most wanted Position -- Chesterfield Islands were bumped to Number 23 Most Wanted in Clublog. Misc: Freight forwarding firms and customs brokers have been identified and contacted. Activity will be on 80-10 meters (possibly 160m, but no 60m) using CW and SSB. They plan on being in the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 28-29th). The QTH looks as if it should permit us erecting antennas close to the beach but the location is ?untried? so we will know more when we get there." Rich, KY6R, posted the following on February 15th [edited]: EXPEDITION LEADER GOES DOWN UNDER TO COORDINATE THE PROJECT -- Expedition Organizer/Leader Dr. Robert Schmieder is on a 2-week multi-stop trip to New Zealand, Tasmania, and Australia to coordinate plans, permits, and logistics for the expedition. His first stop was to see Peter Hillary (son of Sir Edmund Hillary) in Auckland (see picture at: ). Bob was hosted for several days by team member Jacky Calvo ZL3CW. They were able to meet with other radio amateurs who will provide support for the expedition, including Gary/ZL2IFB, Chris/ZL2DX, and Lee/ZL2AL, who will serve as a radio pilot for the DXpedition. In Christchurch, Bob met with Rodney Russ of Heritage Expeditions (who is providing the vessel), and in Kingston, Tasmania, he met with staff at the Australian Antarctic Division (who will issue the permits). Bob reports that these meetings went very well, and there is every expectation that the expedition can go forward as planned. In particular, the contract for the vessel is in hand, and Heritage indicated they can help with certain facilities and logistics that will save the expedition some expenses. The AAD indicated that the expedition can expect to receive permission to visit areas of the island normally off-limits to visitors, and to make collections of organisms and return with them for laboratory analysis. These activities are critical to the expedition?s goal of ?Discovering Life in the Extremes,? so this step gives assurance that the major objec- tives of the expedition can be met. In Christchurch, Bob met with team member Martin Budd, son of legendary Heard Island explorer Grahame Budd, (also a member of the expedition team). Team member Rohan Clarke came from Melbourne for the meeting with the AAD in Kingston, Tasmania, and they also met with Eric Woehler, expert on Heard Island and an important advisor to the expedition. Bob will also be meeting with staff at the University of Tasmania, including Jodi Fox, who will be doing her PhD thesis on the geology of the Laurens Peninsula. In a few days, Bob travels to Sydney to meet with Grahame Budd and with other Australian team members, including John Weigle and Glen Pacey. He will also make an important side trip to Perth to coordinate the local (Fremantle) support team. It is clear that this trip was an essential step to solidify the formal structure of the expedition and the coordination of the team. ?Now,? Bob says, in a flight metaphor, ?We have an approved flight plan. The next steps are to assemble the cargo, suit up the crew, and prepare for take- off in November!? VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND (Update). Dated February 21, 2015, from the KP1-5 Project -- The K1N DXpedition team has only been home a few days, but we are slowly recovering from what was a difficult project. It was over too soon considering that it took 15 years to gain permission, plan and execute the DXpedition. The DX world is very complimentary of our results...140,000 QSOs and over 30,000 uniques. This is especially impressive when you consider that we had only had 14 active operators, 7 HF radios, 5 small amplifiers and only 4 small beams. Many of our QSOs were made barefoot and with dipoles hanging very high on the lighthouse on Navassa. This is what we called a MVC (Minimum Viable Configuration) necessitated by the use of helicopters for primary transport. We have many to thank. The USFWS for allowing our operation after 22 years off-the-air. The terrific team of USFWS officers and biologists who accompanied us and became part of our team. Our sponsors, both equipment and financial, our team of radio pilots, our helicopter crew of Danilo, Nelson and JC, the staff of Moxon's Beach Club, the staff at Ian Fleming Intl. Airport and our new friends, the Haitian fisherman at Navassa. When we departed, they received gifts from us of gasoline, clean water, clothing, food and other items. Hopefully, this will help them in their difficult and dangerous existence. Lastly, we want to recognize and thank a group of 1543 DXers. These people heard and responded to our plea for financial support prior to our DXpedition as this when the majority of our considerable expenses occurred. Last night, these special and generous people had their QSOs with K1N uploaded to LoTW (logbook of the world). This service was NOT a condition of their contribution, but comes as a completed surprise. Thanks to you all for a memorable experience! 73, The KP1-5 Project Bob-K4UEE- President Glenn-W0GJ-Vice President Mike-NA5U-Secretary -------------------------------------------------------- PJ7, ST. MAARTEN (Correction to OPDX.1203). An Uruguay DX Group of operators will be operating from the Red Cross Headquarters in St. Maarten as PJ7C (not PJ2C) between February 28th and March 9th.
