CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Press Releases/Updates). [edited] Here is the latest updates on the CY0C DXpedition scheduled for September 8th: August 31st -- "The CY0C DXpedition team received some promising news from Aaron Carpenter, the Operations Coordinator for Parks Canada-Sable Island. Aaron reported to the team on Tuesday that Sable Island did receive beneficial rains on Monday, September 1. He advised the aircraft landing area is sufficiently firm and packed to allow normal flight operations. As a reminder, with any flights to Sable Island, VFR con- ditions are required at both Halifax and Sable Island. There is no runway or lights to mark the landing area on the island. Now we must hope for good VFR flying weather on Monday. Continue to check for the latest information." September 6th -- "Everything continues to look good for the CY0C one-day DXpedition on Monday, September 8. The team has received frequent updates from Parks Canada and Maritime Air Charter. As of Saturday morning, September 6, the landing area on Sable Island is a GO. The weather fore- cast looks favorable at this point. The team will arrive at the Maritime Air Charter hanger at 1030Z on Monday morning. A weigh-in of the three operators and the DXpedition gear will be performed at that time. During this time, Aaron Carpenter of Parks Canada-Sable Island will be conducting the final check of the runway and will confirm if cross-winds are an issue. Aaron will report to Maritime Air and a final decision will be made as to suitability to fly. The CY0C team is very appreciative to Parks Canada and Maritime Air Charter in helping to make this challenging DXpedition possible..... 73, Murray Adams, WA4DAN" DX MAGAZINE'S "2014 MOST WANTED" SURVEY. The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio Club of San Bernardino, California, will once again host (probably one of the most fun special event activities) the 15th annual "Route 66 On The Air" special event between September 6-14th. The purpose of this event is to offer amateur radio operators a fun way to "Relive the Ride" of their own memories of Route 66, and to celebrate the highway's 84th anniversary. The U.S. Highway 66 established in 1926, was the first major improved highway to link the west coast with the nations heartland. Through stories, songs, and TV shows, the highway came to symbolize the spirit of the freedom of the open road, inspiring many to see America. This means, unfortunately, that TZ6BB will go QRT on Sunday evening (9/7/2014). I will still come back to Mali by mid November or so, for a few days, but my task then will be to dis- mantle the station, pack up all my things and then return to 5N land to stay. I will of course do my best to be on the air from there, but I need first to sort a license, QTH, station etc. Not sure how long that is going to take but I'm afraid it won't happen overnight. I am leaving some of my radio equipment (including a nice HF transceiver) behind, here in Mali, as a little present to a local ham in the hope he will keep Mali active on the bands in the future. Let's see what happens." V5, NAMIBIA. Sebastian, OE3SZA, will be active as V5/OE3SZA from Namibia between October 29th and November 11th. Activity will be SSB only running QRP with an Yaesu FT-817. He was using a Kenwood TS-590 transceiver into a amp (which failed, as well as his PC interface [keying trouble], thus no more CW/RTTY), and he used a small IR vertical antenna on 40/30/20/15/10 meters. As of early Sunday morning (0230z), Zorro reported that he made 2,868 contacts. FT4T, TROMELIN (Press Release, August 26th). Flo, F5CWU, sent out and posted the following on the FT4TA Web page: "One more thing by Flo -- In just a month, we'll leave Europe for Tromelin. Except for a major event, this communication should be the last before departure. It seems important to us to point out the objectives to you that we fixed ourselves. Initially, we will seek to maximize the number of contacts to give everyone a chance whatever their geographical position. To achieve this goal, we should be active quite often on the most prolific bands. Our operators will make their best to exploit the propagation windows towards certain areas. The collaboration of all will be essential not to waste time, stupidly. Our second priority will be activity on the low bands, with all the difficulties that it generates. Let's hope that our equipment and effort will provide good results. Once a day, the logs of FT4TA will be uploaded on ClubLog by a satellite data connection. The leaderboard will not be activated. (to discourage unrestrained race). 'In addition, we point out that neither the pilots, nor the QSL Manager will have access to the log during the operation. Useless to drown them under e-mails. In case of doubt, please reiterate the contact.' The dates of our operation will be concomitant with those of the phi- latelic exhibition of Paris. In addition to a presentation of our activity, the stamps celebrating the 60 years of the 1st amateur radio activity from Tromelin will be presented and put on sale by the TAAF. We are really happy to have taken part in its development and proud to see our activity highlighted. We are pleased to announce that all the QSL cards requests (direct - OQRS - donors) will have this stamp applied. Envelopes will be then entrusted to the TAAF which will have the responsibility to convey, cover and affix the philatelic marks from the island of Tromelin, these stamps being valid only from the French Southern and Antarctic lands. It may slightly lengthen the answer time but it offers the opportunity of having your QSL and a wonderful philatelic envelope. Lastly, keep in mind that the conditions under which the expedition will be realized will be testing, more especially as the team is small. We will be lodged by the TAAF. Besides the radio operation, a certain number of additional tasks will be carried out by the team to assist our hosts, which is legitimate in a community life. We could per moment be obliged to temporarily stop the transmissions of one or more stations for a short period. You can right now find all details on our website. Throughout the stay, our team in France will keep the site updated with news as well as photo- graphs transmitted by satellite with the logs. Thank you for your encouragements and your support..... Press dated September 16th: "OJ0AM AS PART OF 50th ANNIVERSARY OF OH2AM) [edited] -- This coming Saturday, September 20th a party of Juha/OH9MM and Martti/OH2BH will attempt a landing on Market Reef to put OJ0AM on the air for one week on all bands. A permanent beam is in place to boost their signals. But not only will they operate on the air; they also plan to proceed with an experiment of real and virtual Amateur Radio coexisting by conducting a first-ever activity from Market in Virtual Reality. As Market Reef is outside of regular cell phone and terrestrial internet coverage, the team has made an arrangement with Eutelsat Ka-Sat to secure OJ0AM with a satellite broadband link. They tested the link from mainland Finland and a downlink speed of 18Mbit/s and uplink of 6Mbit/s was verified. A latency of some 800 ms was experienced, posing a challenge for operators at both ends of the satellite circuit. This is a classic example of regular Amateur Radio's role in presenting attractive opportunities for young people who would like to see the Amateur Radio community move ahead in concert with today's technology while honoring the traditional radio spectrum as the backbone of Amateur Radio serving many segments of society at large. " "RECAP OF OH-DX-RING, OH2AM -- Back in August 15, 1964, a bunch of school boys got together and they were talking loud. Their idea was to form a club focusing on DX and contests and reaching out beyond the borders of their own country. That was the day when OH-DX-Ring was formally added to the official files of registered associations in Finland. The gang and spirit of OH2AM was born. That single day meant a lot to Amateur Radio in Finland. Already in 1966 OH2AM won the world (multi-multi) in CQWW (OF2AM call was used in the first top scoring effort) and that marked the start of multiple wins from Finland, Gambia, Lebanon, Canary Islands, Madeira and Azores as a team. Later many of the original members embarked on their own individual paths, still working together in the same original spirit: OH0XX, OH2BBR, OH2BC (6m), OH2BH and OH2MM launched their own global adventures in Amateur Radio. Their famous Brando site, originally OH0AM, was established 34 years ago and it is still going strong now under a variety of slick two-by-one callsigns. Several successive generations saw the light in the famed Aland Islands sauna, well known to numerous visiting DXers from all continents. In 1969 Market Reef was introduced as a new DXCC country courtesy of the efforts of this same group, and this started a stream of new country initiatives taking Finns to rare or new DXCC entities on many occasions. An interesting feature of OJ0-land was that a permanent lighthouse keeper, Kee, OJ0MA, made Market Reef a regular fixture on the bands, NCDXF was instrumental in furnishing him with needed equipment. On one special outing, bringing him the equipment, OJ0AM callsign was activated. Today the lighthouse is fully automated but under the special care of the Finnish Lighthouse Society, always friendly to visiting DX types. Please follow the days of OJ0AM at . While the actual 50th anniversary ceremony took place on August 15, 2014, in the heart of Helsinki, it was decided that the OJ0AM, OH0AM and OF2AM callsigns would appear on the air for the remainder of 2014 with some of these highlights featured in special certificate size combo OF2AM/OH0AM/ OJ0AM QSL cards for those contacting all three stations. In 2011, the platform was renovated and placed in the "Houthavens" in Amsterdam as a restaurant. The most important change is the switch to the vessel Akademik Shokalskiy, operated by Heritage Expeditions. This switch brings numerous advantages, including: * Departure from Fremantle, Australia, significantly more convenient to the numerous Australia team members. * The vessel will stay with us for the duration at Heard Island, nominally 21 days. We are discussing the possiblity that the vessel will make a side-trip to Kerguelen during the stay on Heard Island, perhaps enabling additional activities form that location. * Due to the higher vessel speed (14 kt, 16kt max) and the lower distance (2209 nm) of the Skokalskiy, the total trip duration is reduced to 35 days, rather than 45 days previously planned. * Calculations by N6BV, K6TU and KY6R indicate that radio propagation is optimum in November, significantly better than the previously plan for January. * Carrying out the expedition in 2015 enables us to apply for a major grant (up to $100k) from the Explorers Club, available only for 2015. During this period we have also increased the team roster, which currently has 28 members, more than the minimum of 25 needed for the vessel charter. The roster will be updated on this website in the relatively near future. The budget for the entire expedition is $800k. Considering expected support, especially from the amateur radio community, we expect to be able to cap the participant expense at $18k. In addition, the team will be working on corporate in-kind donations that can reduce this to $15k. In summary, we believe we now have all the core elements in place for the expedition, and have moved from the planning phase into the preparation phase. We will welcome your contributions of any kind, and still have spaces for a few more participants. We sincerely thank the sponsors and donors to this point, and future support in advance." The last fifty years has seen the programme grow to 2,500 active island chasers and approximately 15,000 more casual partic- ipants. It is perhaps second in scale and scope to the DXCC award; indeed, many would argue it is a step beyond that programme. The 50th Anniversary event in Windsor was very successful, with enthusiasts travelling from the UK and overseas to celebrate this important milestone in DX history. Those close to it have been anxious to ensure the sustainability of the IOTA programme over the next 50 years and have spent some time reviewing the challenges and opportunities it faces. A number of issues have been identified: firstly, the heavy reliance of the programme on just a few key people; secondly, the need to ensure that IT support for the programme is modern and robust and will include online island credit submission akin to LoTW; and thirdly, a requirement for a friendlier and more accessible website which will be of greater use to both newcomers and the more ex- perienced island chaser. The review accepted without question that all island and participant databases should be preserved and that any changes should be backwards- compatible. In addition, it was important to seek ways to rejuvenate and ensure the sustainability of the programme. This vision we loosely called ?New IOTA?. Over the summer, one particular pathway began to emerge. It was that of partnership rather than a top-down approach which had characterised some aspects of the programme?s management in the past. The RSGB Board is agreed that the IOTA team should be invited to establish a group to develop and implement the ?New IOTA? concept, with the RSGB providing seed-corn finance and other appropriate support. This approach acknowledges that the strength of the programme lies with its national and international participants whom, we are assured, have the motivation, skills and enthusiasm to develop the programme and to promote it to its full potential. This way forward has the full support of the IOTA team and has been welcomed by the wider IOTA com- munity both at home and abroad. Our initial feedback is best summed up by Don Chamberlain MD, W9DC, who said: ?I am excited that the RSGB is combining with IOTA enthusiasts around the world to create a ?New IOTA? program. Their efforts will resolve most existing QSL and submission issues and will encourage IOTA chasers to participate in this very prestigious and challenging award.? Over the next nine months the group will be asked, through a market/user-led approach, to develop a plan for the ?New IOTA? programme to embrace manage- ment and governance, IT, data management and security, and a review of partnering options and any other relevant topics. It is envisaged that this will lead to a devolved structure, with a Memorandum of Understanding to clearly delineate the responsibilities of all parties. The Society and the programme?s Management believe that the resulting governance structure, management processes and IT framework will ensure the IOTA programme is not only sustainable into the next years of the 21st century, but continues to grow and play the prominent role that it has done in Amateur Radio DXing and contest activity for the last fifty years.
