In 2015, Day- light Saving Time (DST) will again go into effect on Sunday, March 8th, at 2:00 AM local time. For the history and details about ST and DST, as well as an interesting map of the world (showing the countries who observe DST), see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/2015.html ADDED NOTE: Hopefully, all amateur radio operators know not to change their GMT/UTC/ZULU clocks. However, since most operators usually set their computers to local time, some may have to change their settings on "some" ham radio software (ex. logging, propagation, DXTelnet, etc..) programs. Deepak, VU2CDP, forward the following message from Krish, W4VKU, dated October 25th [edited]: "You asked and we promised to deliver, and we are well on course! While we have been caught up with the preparations as our travel dates approach, it has been a while since our last update. We apologize for the silence. But we want you to know that we have been very focused on putting VU4 on air ever since we got back home after VU7AG last December. Various emails and notes with QSLs requesting a VU4 operation resulted in taking up this project in earnest. Though the team had limited holiday time from work, they still committed to VU4. The VU4K trip in March was fruitful as it helped lay the groundwork for the upcoming operation. Despite uncertain- ties with various agencies that need to sign off papers for approval, we kept up the pressure and were rewarded with the permission in August. VU4KV plans are on track. All the hardware is already in VU waiting to be shipped. The Cyclone ?HudHud? that passed over VU4 caused boat schedules to change thrice since late September. There is very little chance that we will get a seat on the inter-island helicopter (chopper). For Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar Island), the team had decided not to pursue a separate callsign, as elsewhere reported, and instead focus on operation planning. Expected QRV is anytime from Nov 4th to Nov 7th depending on the arrival of the boat at Campbell Bay. Timely updates will be published by the team members/pilots for the benefit of the DX community. CW & SSB will be the only modes used in the Nicobar activation on 3-4 bands. Neil Island (Andaman) QRV plans are from Nov 16th until 30th November. Clublog Leader-board will remain disabled for both operations. Please keep checking the website for details. A big thank you to the Swan Island DX Association members (Bill K4CIA, Lou K4BYN, Keith N4XC, Karl W4CHX, Paul K5ESW, and Bill K4MWB) for helping with the processing of Bureau cards for past operations. This has allowed us to focus on planning with countless hours on the phone every day. Also, a big thank you to Sri, KJ4DAQ, for all the fabrication work for the antennas, and to Rusty, W3US, for lending a helping hand with the testing. Here's a W3US approved design :). We look forward to seeing you in the pileups.... 73 de Krish W4VKU" November 1st: "As you read this, Krish and Pai are en route to Nicobar from Port Blair in the Andamans. They expect to arrive in Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar Island late Sunday evening after more than a day's sailing. The callsign to be used for Nicobar will be VU4CB and expected QRV is Monday 3rd, November. Krish had paid a visit to the authorities in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss matters related to reciprocal licensing (something Krish and the team are keen to help the dx fraternity with), and an inquiry on the request for a separate callsign resulted in instant approval. A few hours later the document authorizing VU4CB was in hand! A rather unexpected but very welcome development. This helps us tremendously as there was likely to be some confusion if the same callsign was used for both Nicobar and Andaman operations. Our sincere thanks to the staff at WPC, New Delhi for acceding to our request. The Nicobar band plan is published on the page on our website and can be accessed here . We would like to reiterate that this is an IOTA operation by a two man team and the focus would be handing out the rare IOTA entity, not DXCC band counters. So please respect the need of small pistol stations and IOTA chasers world- wide to log this entity. The larger operation from Neil Island will cater to all DXCC needs of DXers world-wide. Thank you for your support and good luck in the pileups!" According to a press release on Friday: "We are now on the final lane of our operation. We will start to dismantle most of the antennas on Sunday because all equip- ment must be packed and stored in big plastic cases for transportation. The boxes will be transported from Tromelin to France in the coming months. We plan to keep all stations running but not on all bands for the last night. Estimated QRT time is around 0100z Monday." As this was being written on Sunday, ClubLog's Web page was showing as of 1542z, November 9th, the QSO count was 58631/Total and 15674/Unique callsigns (24108/CW, 27130/SSB and 7393/RTTY). Breakdown by continent is: 659/AF, 6/ANT, 7088/AS, 34539/EU, 14716/NA, 753/OC and 870/SA. However, they announced on early Sunday: "Today the team got in touch via sat-phone to inform they do not have internet anymore on the island. The logs are safe, but no more uploads will take place until they return to Mayotte on Monday. Later today they may be off air for 1 or 2 hours as they start to disassemble. No more 80/160 activity will take place. The focus tonight is 30 and 40m. They have made nearly 70,000 QSOs. Since there is no more internet please refrain from contacting pilots as the team will not now receive any new messages." The was an added surprise by the FT4TA team mid-week. Many DXers were happy to see some if not all of their QSOs already uploaded to LoTW. Tim, NL8F, will once again be active as V73TM from Arno Island (OC-029)[not Majuro Island as first announced] between November 26th and December 3rd. The reason for the change is the old reliable hotel next to the airport on Majuro with sunny white beaches now belongs to the Education Ministry, so now he will travel by boat (4 hrs) to Arno. Tim informs OPDX that Anro Island is a nice place with a beautiful sandy beach facing north. However, there are some small problems -- no power so now packing generator, no food and now just a bit more work and more costly. He also adds that Paula, NX1P, will be coming along and will be providing the CW end of the operation as well as an entry in the CQWW DX CW Contest. They are looking for a special callsign to use. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using a Butternut HFV9, folding antenna and Inverted L for 160m. Modes will be CW, SSB and possibly Digital. Tim is looking for any donations to help with the new cost which can be sent to via PayPal (This will be much appreciated). QSL via K8NA (see QRZ.com). YV0, AVES ISLAND (Jumping The Gun!). Minutes after going to print about the Aves Island DXpedition in OPDX.1188, the information was taken down off the Web. Edwin, YV5EN, apologized to OPDX and the DX community for the info and states he was "testing the YV0AI QRZ.com page. It was on the Web just about 3 minutes just for testing purposes. Now I'm testing the page in a personal domain which is very different than the QRZ.com. There is no official info at this time and no specific date known, but the Radio Club Venezolano is working very hard on it. Hope YV0 will be soon on the air, but it depends on Venezuelan Navy. Now that everybody knows the callsign, please feel free to visit QRZ.com for any news. Sorry again if those 3 minutes of Web testing makes all the Ham community feel so angry or sad. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE DESK OF RADIO ARCALA OFFICES Helsinki 20 November 2014 RADIO ARCALA?S MY DX SUMMIT LAUNCHING ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21 AT 1000 UTC The newfangled MY DX SUMMIT (MDXS) is scheduled to open for public this week on Friday at 1000 UTC. MDXS introduces a fresh lineup of features with a handy propagation tool as a real eye-opener. Predicted propagation is based on your personal location, and by clicking a DX spot you will see the current conditions and a 24-hour window covering all bands from your station, short and long path, to a distant DX location. This recent face-lift makes several new functions readily available, assuring a pleasant user experience. Mobile users are also extensively supported which makes MDXS the first-ever mobile-ready DX Cluster. MY DX SUMMIT will automatically replace the current DX Summit at this URL address: http://www.dxsummit.fi/ Originally switched on in 1998, DX Summit introduced something that had not been seen before. To quote Yasme President Ward Silver, N0AX who presented the Yasme Foundation (www.yasme.org) Excellence Award to the Finns: ?They basically created a tool that fundamentally changed the nature of HF operating.? Now the upgraded version introduces an easy- to-use propagation forecast tool that enhances knowledge of the behavior of radio waves in a manner that many other spectrum users just watch speechless. "Plans are developing to integrate MY DX SUMMIT into the Navassa Island, K1N, DXpedition. A true trial by fire...?, said Ralph Fedor, K0IR, one of the Navassa team. Radio Arcala transferred MY DX SUMMIT to Kyynel Ltd of Oulu, Finland who in turn employed full-time software specialists to finish this phase and to look into the endless application opportunities that this new software platform can facilitate. We at Radio Arcala wish to thank the more than 500 individuals who were our test partners and provided exciting ideas for our future endeavors to make MDXS a DX knowledge center of the future. Currently some 135.000 unique users visit DX Summit monthly for an average of 55 minutes during each session but the number is expected to rise sharply, following the launch. Ken Claerbout, K4ZW will host a Webinar in early December in honor of this newly born portal with Radio Arcala specialists ready to explain the essence of MY DX SUMMIT and its propagation prediction tools and their use in Amateur Radio. Additionally, Santa Claus will appear on the MDXS portal in December before embarking on his world tour from the frozen landscape of the North. Join the launch festivities by sending a maximum number of spots during the first 14 days; three (3) winners will be visited by Santa Claus bringing his certificate from the OHo-Ho-Ho land of Radio Arcala, OH8X. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- TO BE ADDED TO THE OPDX MAILING LIST -- Click or send requests to: Help: Subscribe: Unsubscribe: OPDX WORLD-WIDE WEB HOME PAGE (provided by John, K8YSE): http://www.papays.com/opdx.html ALSO VISIT THE NORTHERN OHIO DX ASSOCIATION'S WEB PAGES AT: http://www.nodxa.org/ http://www.facebook.com/NorthernOhioDxAssociation -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * All excerpts and distribution of "The OPDX Bulletin" are granted as long as KB8NW/OPDX/BARF80 receives credit. ** To contribute DX info, please send via InterNet Mail to: OR OR Information can now be faxed to the following phone line at: 1-419-828-7791 (F A X only!) /EXIT -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW - E-mail addresses: Editor of the Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin (OPDX - DXer's Tool of Excellence) President of the "Northern Ohio DX Association" (NODXA) DX Chairman for the "Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society ARRL Assistant Director of the Great Lakes Division Sysop of the "Basic Amateur Radio Frequency BBS" (BARF80.ORG) From kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org Sun Nov 23 12:00:00 2014 From: kb8nw at barf80.nshore.org (Tedd Mirgliotta (KB8NW)) Date: Sun, 23 Nov 2014 12:00:00 -0500 Subject: [DX] Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin #1190 Message-ID: <544569.11971.bm@smtp117.sbc.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> SB DX @ WW < KB8NW $OPDX.1190 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 1190 The Ohio/Penn DX PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 1190 BID: $OPDX.1190 November 24, 2014 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF80.ORG (Cleveland, Ohio) Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, AB5K & the AR TelNet Clusters Network, K1XN & GoList, N1UK, NJ1Q & W1AW, K2PF, W2GB, W2VU, NG3K & ADXO, W3UR & The Daily DX, N4AA & QRZ DX, AA6RE, K8BL, K8GI, K8YSE, KT8D, W8GEX & 60m News, W0GJ, 9M2PJU, AT International, DL7UXG & The DX News Letter, DL1SBF, DxCoffee.com, DX-World.Net, EA8URL, ES1CW, F6AJA & Les Nouvelles DX, G3XAQ, I1JQJ/IK1ADH & 425 DX News, I1HYW, I2MQP & DX Italia News, Mediterraneo DX Club, OZ6OM & 50 MHz DX News, PY2SEX, RSGB IOTA Web Site, Sixitalia Weekly, TA1HZ, VA3RJ & ICPO, and the VHF-DX-Portal (MMMonVHF) for the following DX information. FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION -- NCDXF Announces Major Grant to K1N Navassa Island DXpedition -- [edited] November 22, 2014: The Northern California DX Foundation is pleased to announce an enabling major contribution of $35,000 to the K1N Navassa Island DXpedition planned for January 2015. Navassa is #1 on the ClubLog Most Wanted List for 2014. Without major financial support from NCDXF, DXpeditions like this to rare, challenging, and expensive DXCC entities would not be possible. Navassa is an environmentally fragile area with access strictly controlled by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service since 1996. No approved DXpedition has operated there since that time. The KP1-5 Project has been working for over 12 years to obtain permission. There are strict limitations to the number of visitors and the time allowable on the island. Access has been granted for two weeks in January, as that month has the least bird nesting. However, January weather makes access by sea all but impossible. For safety, the USFWS requires a helicopter landing for all personnel and equipment; hence the cost/budget of this ?backyard? DXpedition rivals that of a Southern Ocean DXpedition. Details of the DXpedition are at: http://www.navassadx.com For the past 42 years the NCDXF has funded major DXpeditions to many Most Wanted Entities. The credit for large grants like this goes to NCDXF contributors through- out the world. These are individuals and clubs who understand the economics of DXpeditions to rare entities and who play their part toward making them possible. Have you contributed yet? 73, Tom Berson, ND2T [NCDXF President ] PJ7, SINT MAARTEN. Sent out at 01:45 GMT, 22 Nov 2014, from Neil Island -- Krish, W4VKU, reports that he now has 6 stations up and running. He has problems with low voltage on the 240V supply under load, and he has the resort electrician working on this issue. Stations 1 to 4 are working OK on high power. Station 5 has been on low power because the Elekraft KPA500 amp has been tripping out on the low voltage. Station 6 is coming on line now that another op has joined the team. This station is also suffering low voltage trips but the resort electrician is working on this as well. The Acom 1500 has been performing OK with the low voltage. The Elekraft KPA500 has tripping issues and the Ameritron AL80B has relay closure problems with the low voltage. The team is addressing these issues. Today the team will be installing the 2 element 80m array and plans to get at least one element of the 160m array in operation. These arrays will be installed in the salt water and because of this installation, activities on these arrays has to be performed at low tides which will occur after local noon today. Internet data connection has been an ongoing issue, but Krish is taking steps to ensure that the logs are uploaded as quickly as possible through the use of memory sticks and e-mail but some delay is to be expected.
