Martti, OH2BH, sent out the following on July 28th [edited]: Congratulations to Czech Republic Team of Sarka, OK2SVA (21); Jindrich, OK1NOR (24) and Jan "Honza", OK1JD (20). ETRC 2014 (European Radiosport Team Championship), the youth version of WRTC 2014, was held in Virrat, Finland. one week after the Boston WRTC event with 15 three-person youth teams seated in one room in front of their computers and connected to the global Amateur Radio simulator over the internet, all in Virtual Reality. Once again, the latest technology was utilized in Amateur Radio for the benefit of Amateur Radio's future and by Amateur Radio operators themselves. In total, ERTC 2014 activated hundreds of young people and licensed radio amateurs in full harmony within the participating 44 countries. ERTC 2014 was a huge success bringing youth and seasoned hams together around the same fireworks in the spirit of international Amateur Radio. But Mother Nature added to the excitement as a thunderstorm knocked off electricity in the area and power was restored only 5 minutes prior to the start of the contest. It was a Le Mans type of hectic start leaving many teams in the starting grid. The Head Judge, Hans, PB2T, President of IARU Region 1, ruled the first 22 minutes out to give a level playing field to those slow in booting their contest machines and putting their racing helmets on. When the dust had settled, the following three teams stood on the podium with their medals: GOLD MEDAL, CZECH REPUBLIC: Sarka Vavrova, OK2SVA (21); Jindrich Kostal, OK1NOR (24) and Jan ?Honza? Dohnalek, OK1JD (20) SILVER MEDAL, ITALY: Nicola Tonci, IZ6TSA (20); Gabry Iuliani, IT9RGY (26) and Orazio Intagliata, IT9DBF (25) BRONZE MEDAL, ESTONIA: Keijo Kapp, ES1XQ (17); Tauri Helimets, ES5HTA (29) and Keven Mekk, ES6AXS (18) As Silver and Bronze teams were less than three multipliers apart, the fact that the S/W platform (HamSphere 3.0) used in the contest logged all QSOs into the system, gave the organizers full confidence in verifying each station and their exchange. Only seven (7) multiplier uniques were found in the database and they did not affect the final rankings. WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT ERTC CONTINENTAL WINNERS Europe: Gaudentas Mozura, LY3BHY Asia: Faisal Al-Ajmi, 9K2RR South America: Jairo Ramos Sansone, PU3JAI Oceania: Eko, 91HS576 (Central Java, Indonesia) Africa: Tarek Zeidan, SU1TZ North America: ARRL Centennial, W100AW* * W100AW was activated by Martti Laine, OH2BH, as part of the ARRL Centennial celebrations in Hartford, Connecticut. Thanks (K1ZZ) and congratulations to the American Radio Relay League. YOTA 2014 & ERTC 2014 ERTC 2014 was part of a European wide youth gathering known as Youngsters On The Air (YOTA) which is held every year in different European Union countries under EU and International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) sponsorship with the aim of bringing youth together in the spirit of cultural exchange and learning from one another in all segments of Amateur Radio, science and electronics. This year fifteen EU countries were represented. ERTC also brought young people together globally over the internet, using Amateur Radio simulation software on a shared platform - all in the natural hangout of today's youth. HAMSPHERE (HS) PLATFORM HS is an Amateur Radio (AR) simulation software package giving a hands-on opportunity to youngsters who wish to experience AR in its natural setting while still busy with their studies and not able to take a ham exam or to invest in actual AR equipment. HS coexists with real AR with true propagation science, QSL collection and a variety of contest formats and related equipment. It offers an experience which will encourage young people to study for a ham license and thus enter our wonderful world of Amateur Radio. The latest breakthrough in the simulation software features real-time propagation and system integrated logging, instant QSLing and awards. ERTC 2014 PATRON The ERTC 2014 event was honored to have Professor Rumen Gechev, LZ1MS, of WRTC 1990 fame as patron of this first-ever Amateur Radio-like WRTC simulation over the internet. Rumen himself finished 4th in 1990 in the first WRTC held in Seattle, WA. He has subsequently proceeded with life with a highly impressive career as Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and currently as Professor in Economics and Sustained Development at the University of National and Word Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria, adding to his Visiting Professor duties at many leading universities. Rumen has not lost interest in Amateur Radio and he was active during ERTC 2014 giving an LZ multiplier to many participating youth teams ? including his own Team Bulgaria. Gene, K5GS, VK9MT Treasurer, sent out the following: As promised, we are publishing our DX-pedition's financial summary to club and foundation donors. There have been many discussions and questions on various Internet forums regarding DX-pedition funding. Questions generally included: - how is the money spent - how are spending decisions made - what is each team member's investment - what happens to surplus funds, (if any) Journeys to uninhabited and/or remote islands that require a boat or airplane charter will continue to be expensive. The greater DX community needs more awareness of DX-pedition financing. Like all DX-peditions, VK9MT established and managed a detailed budget. Requests for Price were sent to suppliers for major purchases and reviewed with the team. Our Advance Team included the 2 team leaders and the Treasurer, all local purchases were closely monitored and logged. While there will always be surprises, we felt the project came together very well. Attached for your information is our financial summary. We appreciate your support and the support we received from manufacturers and retailers. We're looking forward to our next project. ------------------------------------------------------------------- VK9MT Mellish Reef 2014 Financial Summary (US Dollars) As promised during the fundraising phase of the VK9MT Mellish Reef 2014 DX-pedition we are submitting this financial summary to each organization that made a donation to our DX-pedition. We appreciate the support of the 52 organizations, over 360 individual DXers that made, or committed, a donation during the project and those that made a donation via OQRS. We are pleased to report that all committed donations were received....... To celebrate the world's first global contact between Frank Bell, Z4AA, (A sheep farmer in Shag Valley, NZ) and Cecil Goyder, G2SZ, (an 18 year old student at Mill Hill School in London), on October 18th, 1924, look for radio amateurs in the UK and New Zealand to activate a number of special event stations. Some of the stations mentioned are: GB2NZ - Between September 20th and October 18th; from a number of UK locations and all bands between 160-10m. See QRZ.com. 2SZ - (*) Between October 11-18th; from Mill Hill School. The UK spectrum regulator Ofom has agreed to issue this special callsign for the anniversary week, and the radio waves can be expected to be buzzing with stations seeking to contact this rare callsign. ZL4AA - Between October 11-18th; from Shag Valley in South Island, New Zealand; at Mill Hill School and Shag Valley, amateurs will recreate the first Goyder/Bell contact, hopefully on a wave- length close to that used in 1924. ZM90DX - Radio amateurs in New Zealand will continue to operate on all bands. * Members of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB), which is the national society for amateur radio in the UK, will be providing the station at Mill Hill School and much of the supporting documentation. The School will be using the facility provided by the RSGB as an interactive learning tool for the pupils. SPECIAL EVENT. On August 31st it will be 40 years that the Dutch offshore radio stations stopped their transmissions due to changes in legislation. Many fans still mourn the loss of their beloved stations in 1974. Arie, PD0ARI, from Giessenburg, The Netherlands, will be operating the Special Event Station PD538RNI from August 28th until September 19th. He will be active on 10m, 20m and 40 meters. All operations will be on Phone. The "538" in the callsign stands for the last frequency the offshore radio station Veronica used, and RNI stands for Radio Northsea International, the name of the other station that had to stop 40 years ago. QSL via PD0ARI, direct (w/SAE & 2 USDs) or by the Bureau. Radio Northsea International with their psychedelically painted ship the MEBO 2 seized to exist altogether after their offshore days ended. In 1975 Radio Veronica (that targeted more on music with Dutch origins) became a station in the Public Radio and TV system of the Netherlands, and went commercial as soon as it was possible (1995). Today the name Veronica is still affiliated with a commercial TV channel and Radio Veronica is also still operating. Arie explains his radio addiction: "My love for radio has started in the early 70's while listening to Radio Veronica and Radio Northsea Inter- national. Both stations transmitted from radio ships on the North Sea and had millions of listeners. Radio Veronica transmitted on medium wave. Radio Northsea International transmitted on medium wave, short wave and FM. Every day good programs, fantastic DJ's, nice jingles and radio tunes! The DJ's became sort of family; a part of your life! Radio Northsea Inter- national on Shortwave triggered me to listen to SW (DX) radio stations and a new hobby was born.... and it was a training for good radio ears too!" In 1974 the Dutch government passed its anti-pirate legislation and announced that the law was to come into effect on September 1st, 1974. Both stations closed down in the evening of August the 31st 1974. Arie continues: "August the 31st 1974: The day the music died! After being a Shortwave Listener for a long time, I got my radio license and started as a HAM operator. Every day I'm active on the bands: no day without radio! I will arrive in Paro late after- noon on Sept. 26th, and will depart on the morning of Oct. 2nd. I will be staying close to city of Paro. This time I have nothing else to do and I can focus 100% on operating amateur radio! The QTH will be up on a hill facing to north giving a good take off to North America, most of South America, northern Asia, Middle-East and whole Europe should be good. I will have a K3 + KPA500, a 2-el tribander, 7m telescope mast and dipoles for 24, 18 and 7 MHz and two 10-12m fiberglass poles. I will have everyday 28, 21 and 14 MHz available and at least one (hopefully two) of the dipoles. I will be operating SSB. I try to start on Sept. 26th with one of the dipoles. From 27th onwards I will have the yagi up. On Oct. 2nd I will have an early morning flight and need to go QRT sometime during the night. I have not yet checked the weight of my stuff, but I know it will be very much up to the limit (more than I ever had before!). So, this is the plan at the moment and if I have to deviate from it, I'll let you know. Looking for nice pile-ups and hope to be able to give out a new one or at least a new band to many of you. The July 2014 DX Advisory Committee Report (Doc #27), which was submitted by Arne Gjerning, N7KA, Chairman of the DX Advisory Committee (DXAC), to the ARRL Board of Directors (BOD) and Program and Services Committee (PSC), is now made public and contains some interesting subjects: Remote stations - The DXAC favored the proposed change of rule I.9, stating, however, some distance limitation should be included for the remote station. Using an idea similar to that used for contest stations, establishing a distance of 200km separation between the remote station and the operator?s home station location and that no part of a remote station can be located more than 200km from any other part. Entity Criteria - The DXAC proposes that NO Change be made to the entity criteria at this time and any efforts presently in process for any entity to gain membership in the UN or the ITU be allowed to take its due course. This vote does not indicate a failure of the DXAC to reach a consensus. It does, however, represent the divided opinion of the DX community on this subject. For the complete report, go to: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/About%20ARRL/Committee%20Reports/2014/July/Doc_27.pdf E6, NIUE. For years, the DXer's number one tool for QSL information has been John Shelton's, K1XN, "GoList". The following was announced by John this past week (August 12th): "Hi Folks, -- As you know, I have been having sight problems with the only eye that I have remaining. It is taking much longer this time to recover from this episode. In con- sidering my health issues, I needed to and did make a business decision today. It was a very hard one to make. As of today, the GOLIST is going 'FREE'. I will continue to upload to the download page, the weekly data file and DX Alert. The download page will still require an access code. I will continue to sell the 'WIN EQF*' Logging software, the RAC Flying Horse Call Book CD. I will accept donations via PayPal to help keep the web site up and running. A PayPal Donation button will be added to the Order page and Download page. A donation is appreciated but not mandatory. You folks have supported Golist for many years and I appreciate that very much. That is what made this decision so hard. You guys are special and I wanted you to hear of the business change direct from me first. You now have access to GoData files for as long as I am able to produce them. The password you now use will remain active unless you ask me to change it. Thank you again for your support for all these years -- John K1XN" COMMENT FROM EDITOR (KB8NW): I want to thank John for his many years of service. I remember when the GoList was just a newspaper (I still have many issues saved) and it was about the only available source of QSL info for DXers world-wide until the InterNet became popular. Then John switched to an online service/Website which provides the DXers with a much more detailed QSL and DX info. Again, thanks, John, for your services, and I am sure many DXers (and myself) wish you well and quick recovery. ILLW STATIONS. QSL cards directly to his home address or via SRAL QSL Bureau. CY0, SABLE ISLAND (Press Releases/Updates). [edited] Here is the latest updates on the CY0C DXpedition scheduled for September 8th: August 16th -"The CY0C DXpedition team has been informed by Parks Canada and Maritime Air Charter that flights to Sable Island have not been possible the last few weeks due to the beach conditions on the island. The weather on Sable has been extremely dry and the sand "runway" on the island is too soft and loose to attempt landings. Even when landings were possible, the aircraft had to be lightly loaded. Parks Canada, Maritime Air and the CY0C team will continue to assess the weather and landing conditions on the island leading up to September 8th. Meanwhile, pre- parations continue on schedule. N0TG and WA4DAN have shipped gear and antennas to fellow team member VE1RGB in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The CY0C team will issue frequent updates leading up to September 8th." August 23rd - "One-Day DXpedition to Sable Island, CY0C, scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2014 -- A team consisting of VE1RGB, WA4DAN, and N0TG, each of whom have previously operated from Sable Island, plan to depart from Halifax, Nova Scotia, weather permitting, around 1115Z on Monday, September 8. Departure from Sable Island is planned for 2245Z, which should allow for approximately 8 hours of operating time. The special call sign, CY0C, has been issued for this operation. At the moment, the policy of Parks Canada is that '... visits to Sable Island shall be restricted to daylight hours only...' One of the objectives of the CY0C DXpedition is to assess the feasi- bility and practicality for future one-day amateur radio DXpeditions to Sable Island.. For this operation, N0TG will primarily operate CW on 17 and 30 meters while WA4DAN will operate SSB on 20 meters. VE1RGB will take the lead in assessing the operations and determine technical methods and opera- tional techniques to improve efficiencies. A detailed 'feasibility assessment' with recommendations that, hopefully, could encourage future groups to consider one-day DXpeditions, will be shared with the DX community. Any last minute changes in schedule, due to weather conditions, beach conditions, etc. will be posted to the team website at , as well as to the various DX bulletins." FS, ST. MARTIN. John, K9EL, will once again be active as FS/K9EL from St. Martin (NA-105, DIFO FS-001, WLOTA 0383, WW Loc. FK88) between November 20th and December 2nd. Activity will be on 160-6 meters. FT4T, TROMELIN (Press Release, August 26th). Flo, F5CWU, sent out and posted the following on the FT4TA Web page: "We have just passed the 100 days mark before the beginning of our FT4TA operation to the island of Tromelin. Since the last official press release many things have evolved well; we are extremely fortunate. Thanks to the strong mobilization around our project, we are relatively trustful in the fact of being able to gather the necessary budget. If we do not meet last minute problems, and if individual donations continue to flow at the current rate, we should balance our budget (after the expedition). Some partners have not yet validated their assistance, and we definitively count on them! In addition, several people in Japan have mentioned to us they encountered problems with the Paypal button on our website. In order to circumvent this problem, we invite people who would be in this instance to use our address directly from their Paypal account. Almost all of the equipment was gathered by the team. This equipment was lent, purchased or taken from our personal stations. We want to express our thanks to Spiderbeam (masts), Elecraft (radios), OM Power (amplifiers), Microham (interfaces), Messi and Paolini (coaxial cables), DX Engineering (phasing 80m) and DX World.net, which sponsors us the Internet access by satellite to let you use our on-line logbook and read daily news from the team during the operation. At the end of June, three pallets of equipment had been shipped to Reunion Island. They have been transported to Tromelin Sunday (by helicopter) by the logistics service of TAAF. This possibility was offered to us suddenly and was not in our initial plan. Although it induces very important expenditure, we could not let pass this opportunity because it will deeply modify the physiology of our operation. It would not have been possible for us to carry all this equip- ment on a small aircraft. This freighting marks the true point of no return! Our preliminary works with TAAF continue. Michel, FM5CD, and Seb, F5UFX, went at the end of May to R?union to meet our interlocutors (TAAF, civil aviation, airline company). We want to highlight again the trusted relation- ship and the incommensurable assistance brought by TAAF. 2014 marks the 60th birthday of the first amateur radio activity from Tromelin. Prepared in collaboration with the philatelic service of TAAF, and drawn by an artist, a special stamp will be put on sale at the time of the Autumn Philatelic Exhibition in Paris (November 6th to 9th). During this event, an amateur radio station will be set-up on the TAAF booth by the radio-club of Provins, F6KOP. They will proceed to demonstrate and make contacts with FT4TA team twice a day. It's very important to promote our activity in such an exhibition. Our website evolves constantly. The pages known as 'classical' are available since the beginning (operators, pilots, QSL manager, sponsors) and news articles appeared lately (historical, bandplan..). Others are in preparation and should be published soon (interview of FR5ZU and F6JJX, two ex-'Tromelin' operators, PowerPoint presentation..). It is the ideal time to prepare your station to be ready. On October 30th, point your antennas towards the Indian Ocean! In the meantime join us on Facebook & Twitter to follow our news and keep an eye on the Tromelin2014 website . A surprise will be announced soon!" GJ, JERSEY. The operation will occur within the next 18 months and will be coordinated with the USFWS work flow. Over the past year, the KP1-5 Project has had numerous meetings with various levels of USFWS management. Throughout our discussions, their personnel have been courteous, professional and cooperative. We have been treated with sincere interest and respect and believe that amateur radio operators may now be viewed as partners and not adversaries. As with the Desecheo operation in 2009, and in order to be transparent and fair, the USFWS has requested proposals for the amateur radio operation from those individuals and groups that have already applied for a Special Use Permit in the past. The KP1-5 Project will be submitting a proposal and hoping to be selected as they were for the very successful Desecheo (K5D) operation. We wish to thank the USFWS for their decision to allow this operation. Navassa Island is ranked #2 most-needed DXCC entity by The DX Magazine and #1 by ClubLog. T30, WESTERN KIRIBATI (Update/Bulletin #2): "(August 29th, 2014) -- Everything is on schedule 4 weeks before our expedition starts at the end of September. As already announced our group will run four stations 24/7. Also one or two more well equipped stations can be used from time to time and as back-up. Only one station will be possible on each band at the same time because we have only one antenna location. The antenna setup includes 3 spider beams, a 4 element for 6 m, several full size loops and verticals and small amplifiers. Our main targets are lots of radio contacts with far away Europe, but we will not forget the hams from the other parts of the world. A serious effort is planned to all bands 160 to 6 m and modes CW, SSB and RTTY. We decided to change the previous announced 10-m-SSB-Frequency from 28.445 to 28.465 MHz to avoid conflicts at the IOTA frequency 28460 kHz with our split. The most wanted bands and modes are known and will be considered. Right now we have no plans to take part in any contests to a full extend. If we have a good internet access we will do a daily log update at club log. The T30D-crew is overwhelmed and grateful for the great support of many Ham Radio Foundations and individual hams. Special thanks go to sponsors who have made a donation in advance. This helped a lot with early expedition costs. Our crew also wants to thank the DL7DF-crew and DL9GFB for material help. One last challenge was to receive the confirmation from the involved airlines for oversize and excess baggage which is not only extremely expensive but also a long process. Keep your fingers crossed for a high FLUX and good conditions. We look forward to receive messages of good and unexpected band openings during our stay and therefore we will check our email several times a day." T7, SAN MARINO (Satellite Op). Operators Boris/9A2GA and Neven/9A5YY will be active as T7/homecall on an amateur radio satellites DXpedition from the Republic of San Marino (Grid JN63FW) between Friday, September 5th, and Sunday, September 7th. They will be active during the day on the majority of satellite passes. They plan to be on air via AO-7, FO-29 and SO-50 satellites (CW, SSB, FM). Please, be short giving reports and give others chance to do satellite QSO with them. QSL via their home callsigns 9A2GA and 9A5YY, for details see QRZ.com. TA7/TC7, TURKEY. Between August 1st, 2014, and November 30th, 2018, applicants must collect at least 1418 points. The following rules apply for obtaining points: * OP0PPY = 500 points * Special event stations with prefix OP14, OP15, OP16, OP17, OP18 contribute each for 250 points; Belgian stations need to work at least three of these stations, other European stations two and stations outside of Europe one; * During the month of November of the years 2014-2018 all other Belgian stations will count 30 points. There are no band or mode restrictions, but contacts via terrestrial repeaters, Echolink etc. are not accepted. Every station may be accounted for only once in the AWARD application. There is an "Endorsement" available if you collect the 1418 points in one calendar year. Five of these "endorsements" are available (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Date: Thursday, September 11 Time: 9 PM EDT (Friday, September 12 - 01:00 UTC) Registration: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/582697442 WESTERN GRID EXPEDITION (Satellite). OPDX Web Master John, K8YSE, will be embarking on a grid expedition to some Western States beginning shortly after Labor Day. The grids that he will definitely operate from are: CN93, CN96, DN03, DN05, DN07, DN14, DN15, DN20, DN21, DN22, DN23, DN48, DN54, DN68, DN76, DN78, DM38, DM48 and DM49. John states, "There will be many other grids on the route, but I'll only operate from them if the situation permits. This is a tent camping trip, and the weather will play a role in when and if I can operate. The first grid will be DN54 although there may be one or two before that depending on the timing. I will be using an Icom 910H and an Arrow or Elk antenna rather than the setup in my truck that was used on the Lake Superior Expedition. Setup time and weather will be a factor. I don't anticipate operating in darkness although it may be possible at campsites. I will be using computer control on the linear birds. We don't have many satellites now and since AO-7 is now switching between Mode A and B, it will only be available every other day. The primary birds will be FO-29 and SO-50. There may be some AO-73, but not likely. If AO-7 is weak, I may operate on CW on that bird only." John will be track-able on APRS as K8YSE-9 (cellphone 3g/4g) and/or K8YSE-12 on RF. He also adds, "Sometime in October I will plan a short trip over to DM63/64 if anyone needs those grids. And on January 1st, 2015, I will operate at least one pass from FM13 in the afternoon." John doesn't anticipate doing LoTW for this expedition. Cards should be sent direct to him. If you have many contacts to confirm, a log excerpt can be sent that he can sign and return to you. Please make sure you indicate which grid he was in for each QSO. He also plans to record all passes and log on paper as well. QSOs will be confirmed sometime in December. Suggested frequencies are around 7007, 10105, 14007, 18073, 21007, 24897 and 28007 kHz. Equipment is a FT857 w/100 watts and a modified MP-1 portable whip antenna. Bob will be active in the CQWW DX RTTY Contest (Septemeber 27-28th) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (15 or 10m) entry. QSL direct via G4DBW with 2 'green stamps' or IRC or via RSGB Bureau.
