Larry made some good points about "windows of opportunity" on the Low Bands.

I would like to make one addition:

Signals to and from the West actually peak AFTER sunrise, by 10 to 20 minutes on 80M and 20 to 40 minutes on 40M. This applies at BOTH ends of the path. Observe how signals from Russia, Europe, and Africa will rise and fall at / after THEIR sunrise. Knowledgable Low Band DXers often follow the sunrise across UA / EU / AF from 0200 to 0800Z. I have heard and worked stations in the Indian Ocean up to 1 hour past their sunrise on 80M and 2 hours past their sunrise on 40M. Similarly, I have worked stations in the Pacific well past my own sunrise.

There can be a similar peak BEFORE sunset. This is more apparent during low sunspot activity.
