Here is a good one to ponder. I am putting together some info on the history of
amateur radio in the Arctic. Wonder if anyone can remember the call sign of the
station that operated from Fletcher's Ice Island (Also called C-3) back in the
mid to late 1950's? I seem to remember that when the island was near Greenland
it was serviced from Thule Air Base and used a call beginning with KF#xx. It then
floated into Russian waters for a while and then in to waters north of Alaska
where it was serviced from Elmendorf AFB. Does anyone remember if the call sign
changed when in Alaskian waters? Also wonder if there was ever a Russian ham radio
presence when the island was in their area. I also remember that their antennas had
sunk into the ice. I worked them once from Newfoundland but do not remember their
callsign.
