[DX] Can anyone explain this?

The previous statements are basically true, but did the signal come up or did
the observers galactic noise level drop as he entered into darkness.
Applying grayline theory at 21 MHz does not always follow as precisely as at
lower frequencies.

You are entering into what is really the "art" of the hobby.

You are also entering into what makes fools out of many people as it is one
of the most variable areas and often defies its own principles. It will make
you an expert one day and a fool the next.

Any specific path can take years to explain the reasons for propagation. I
built a four yagi array in MD for the government that sat and monitored a
path to South America for several years. All antennas the same hieght ( 88
feet within 2 inches), 1/4 wave apart (withing 2 inches), on the same heading
(within 4 degrees). People with big budgets cover all the bases. The study
was at 20 MHz so it was a project I got into with the proximity of the 15
meter band.

I'll bet these guys are still scratching their heads trying to explain some
of the unexpected openings along the path during hours that defy explanation
in the basic theories of propagation.
