LOOK CAREFULLY! There is far from nothing.
At the bottom on the front is a black bar code, put there by USPS most probably your zipcode. On the reverse is a red bar code that also fluoresces bright orange under ultraviolet light. I believe this was encoded by Australia Post as the US quit the orange color years ago.
The real key is the Air Mail sticker on the front. It fluoresces a nice yellow green under ultraviolet as do most us stamps valued at over 10¢. Automatic facer/canceller machines use that glow to orient the envelope for cancelation and or sorting by machine readers.
However, I do agree there should have been some HUMAN readable instructional markings for PO staff and collectors! I will end saying thanks for a New One, how about OC 193 next time?
