Received my 9M0L QSL June 22.
Interesting enough last Saturday the Filipino News Channel had a 30 minute
long program about claims made to Spratly and Scarborough Reef by China,
Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. They did not show Spratly but did show aerial photos
of huts built on some small reefs of Scarsbough by the Chinese. The
Philippines claims China is fishing illegally there and removing and
destroying reef growth. The U.S. Coast Guard recently gave the Philippines a
378 ft high speed, high endurance cutter that they have on patrol there.
They claim these islands belong to them. Interesting that the Scarborough
Reef DXpedition in 2007 used a Chinese call sign BS7H and in my log I have
worked Spratly under Malaysia calls 9M0C, 9M0M, 9M4SDX (How was a 9M4 call
Spratly?), and now 9M0L plus DX0K and DX0JP Filipino calls. I believe the
Philippine government operates the small airfield and weather station on
Pag-asa Island, the largest of the Spratly Islands. I believe the 9M
operations are from Pulau LAYANG Island, a smaller island of the Spratly
group.
