[Dx-qsl] [NCDXC Chat] NCDXC question of the week

I think this is a brilliant idea. I posited recently that using Kickstarter
might be an excellent method for fundraising for an endeavour such as this.
Now with this said, given the world has ~50,000 active DXers, as most
DXpeditions "unique" totals bear out. While it would be nice to see everyone
kick in $10, the reality is that very few will. And, of course, this
wouldn't be a one-time thing. The first couple of funding efforts might do
reasonably well but the 10th or 24th?

I think it's also logical for "average" or smaller station owners to only
donate if they've actually made a QSO. I know that in my own personal case,
I'd make a small donation ahead of time, but the amount given increases
depending on whether or not I get them on all modes, all regular bands
and/or 160. If a team ignores my region at greyline consistently or handles
pileups badly, I'm less likely to want to give a significant sum than if
they are world-class A-1 ops. I'll give a huge donation (well, huge for *me*
given my financial situation) to whichever operation yields my 40th zone on
80m or puts me over the top to Honor Roll, but I'd be less inclined to give
more than $10-20 to a group of relatively unknown ops who sit and run Europe
all day and night while NA goes begging. You get the idea.

Subject: [NCDXC Chat] NCDXC question of the week

Here is the NCDXC question of the week:

We all know that DXpedition funding is a big challenge these days. Is it
time for a complete paradigm shift in how DXpeditions are funded?

For example, there are entities such as Bouvet/Crozet that could be
activated relatively easily assuming that proper funding was available.
Those that are currently leading DXpeditions to rare destinations are
reluctant to launch such an endeavor because of the uncertainty of funding.

What if a group were to determine a likely budget figure such as $500,000
and then announce that once they have raised the funding, they will set a
date for their DXpedition and make it a reality.  Perhaps the organizers
could specify that all funds are collected by the NCDXF and then dispensed
once the goal is met.

How would this approach be accepted by the DX Community?

The current model of making a donation with your OQRS or a few bucks in the
envelope does not work for this kind of DXpedition and requires the
organizers to carry too much financial risk.

What are your thoughts?
