The answer to this is actually quite simple. The French verb "demander"
simply means "to ask."

Agree !!!  I was using the Google translator for an email I had received 
recently.  I was SHOCKED at what was being said to me!  At the end, the 
words....all my best my dear friend Ken... came out.  Yep, after I received 
the next one boy did things mellow.  I think the sentence structure for some

circumstances in some languages can "force" certain word usage that isn't 
really meant.  This fellow bent over backwards doing me a favor and I didn't

see where all the "attitude" was coming from.  Now I do....just language 
differences.
