[Dx-qsl] US Buro Mgrs: How many QSLs to exceed 1/4 inch thickness?

In my experience, to keep it under 1/4", it's roughly 2 ounces. Our bureau
(second district) sends this out with a 61 cent stamp and I've yet to have
one get kicked back. I use a scale to carefully meter the weight and I have
a 1/4" plastic gauge that I test a random sampling of outgoing envelopes and
most are either at or under 1/4". Occasionally one is a hair over but
invariably they'll get to the addressee.

The obvious test is to put cards into a standard envelope and measure the
envelope's thickness yourself. What I find surprising is that your bureau is
sending out 50 cards at the 1/4" rate.

I just took 50 random cards, added a 6x9 envelope, and it tipped the scale
at just over 5.8 ounces. If I were sending this to a subscriber it would be
mailed at the 6 ounce first-class package rate of $2.07.

Subject: [Dx-qsl] US Buro Mgrs: How many QSLs to exceed 1/4 inch thickness?

I have a question for U.S. buro mgrs and sorters:

The US Postal Service has changed the rules in the last couple of years
regarding the
thickness of letters.   Anything over 1/4 inch thick and rigid, and the item
is considered
as a package, and is sent at a higher rate.  Because of this, my envelope
with 50 cards
in it arrived today with 62 cents postage due.

Is there a rule of thumb that I can politely tell my sorter what is the
maximum number
of cards he can send, and still be considered a "letter"?  I realize the
thickness of
QSLs can vary, but I am just looking for a rough estimate.  Maybe I should
be asking for the number of ounces?  Mine was about 6 ounces.
