Right from the git-go, I have printed out my own cards. No- they are not
multiple color with a big nice picture in the background - though they could
easily be, given todays printers/programs. The more colors - the more ink,
swo that is no feasiable for someone on a tight budget. Have him do a
little doodling, and draw up a picture himself, It can be any old subject
that he might be interested in. I worked for Boeing, and so one of my first
cards was a bi-plane, with a character setting in the cockpit, waving . In
Hong Kong, I took a snap of a sidewalk painters paining of a Chinese Junk.
It was a color slide, that I then took to a photograpy studio (in this case
my own darkroom) and printed a black and white photo. I then took that to
a local printer and had him make up a "block", which could then be used by a
cheap printer to make as many cards as ever neeed. I ,somewhere around
here, still hae that block. Today, I could take the photo, use one of the
freebie (that comes with the computer) photo studio programs and do the same
thing, minus needed the block. Then use that photo on my own cards. In
Greece, I did somewhat the same, taking a picture of the Akropolis, then
going home and looking at it - drew up my own drawing of the main lines seen
in my photograph. I then sent that in to a commercial outfit who printed up
some cards. After that, I just took the cards, and ran them thru a copy
machine at work - paying for card stock and ink per what the boss figured
the ink costs were. Later on, I stretched my capabilities and drew a
caraiture of myself and have used that for many years, The latests card is a
color photo of me sitting at my rig (the one used in QRZ.COM, and its placed
int he upper right of my card, with my call etc. all on the left and bottom.
I always use a one sided card these days, and that "QSL Design and
Print" program makes that extra easy.

There are a few free QSL Maker, QSLDesign and Print, etc. programs out there
that let you use any design you desire to roll your own. I then purchase a
package of card stock from our local big box store (Walmart) in 4 separate
colors, and run them thru my printer. The total cost: about $4.50 for 300
sheets, which can make either 3 or 4 cards each (according to sizing and
outlay.) Course there is the cost of ink on top of that, and that you have
to figure out yourself, according to the make/model and printer, and how
much used per card. I get many hundreds of cards out of a large ink pack -
using mostly black but my call etc. in color.

The thing is - its not only cheaper - but it allows one to use their own
artistic capabilites, and stretches the "lifestyle" of ham radio. Besides
that, its been fun!
