I always like these discussions and questions, as its always amazing to
reflect on how demand for DXCC entities changes over time.
Spratly was in VERY high demand in the 1980s and I think not until Romeo
showed up as 1S0RR/1S0XV did demand begin to get tamped down. Expeditions
followed and expeditions like 9M0S and the other 9M operations have really
made Spratly an entity that is still top 100, but in the bottom 50.
Same with Albania. One of the most tremendous pileups I've ever encountered
was when ZA1A showed up. Now, ZA isn't even on the top 100 list...
At the same time, there are islands like Johnston, Midway, and Wake which,
in the 1980s, anybody on th air after 0000z could work simply becaue the
USAF and USCG had so many personnel stationed on those islands, there was
guaranteed to be at least one or two hams stationed there who wanted to play
radio during the off-duty hours.
Now, they're all top 30...
