This is one reason why I insist on more than one QSO to be reported
upon. If the SWL heard you - and got the callsign of your
'qso-partner' it would have been fairly easy for him to hear the next
QSO - or at least make comment on band conditions.

Yes, that is exactly what I recommend - and I'm a SWL (and a Ham)

It is possible [grey-line] that he did hear you - but personally I
have very grave doubts, especially in the middle of a big contest - as
you say the EU QRM would have been pretty horrendous.

I wonder if Andreas has any thoughts on this.
Well, I checked my logs. During the last 8 years, I have 24 JA stations
logged
on 80m and 8 verified. That's not too bad because as an SWL I'm surely not
in
the first row in getting QSLs and I send all my cards via the bureau. So
hopefully
there will be more answers. And 80m is not my preferred band. Only 92 DXCC
verfied here.

Speaking of EU-QRM: I use here a TIMEWAVE DSP-599zx filter. This is really
great.
I was able to hear 6F1IHF (Mexico - NA-183 that's in the pacific site !) on
40 m cw.
I set the bandwith down to 100 Hz (or less- can' t remember exactly) and I
could hear
them (RST was 469). But I've heard nothing without my filter. And they
worked split.
And what antenna I had used? Believe it or not: just a simple 20m wire
hanging out
of my window ! And I have logged 2 stations - NOT in the cluster!
I will never forget this hearing as my filter was brandnew and I was highly
surprised.

And I have heard antarctic stations (even made some sound files) just with a
20m
wire... okay - that was on 20m.

What I wanted to say is, that it IS possible. And a fact is, that you can
understand
calls transmitted in cw, while you can't understand the call if it is
transmitted in SSB.

Just my 2 cents...
Have a nice weekend and take care.
