I agree with Rich (grey-line - but a little too late)
hearing on 80m is easier then transmitting. Did he mention what kind of  
antenna
he used? May be he is living on the country side and has enough space  for
a Beverage antenna in asia direction?
Anyway, with a good antenna, Japan - DX isn't that "hard" DX on 80m.
