Theresa:
I forgot to mention in my email last night that there are lots of other things to do here. There are some terrific hikes, and of course there are lots of very nice golf courses in this area. I do have my golf gear, and am probably about a day away from trying to swing a club for the first time in over 2 weeks. Hope to hear from you, and hope all is well with you. If you do decide you might want to come up here, please give me your telephone number with your email as I do not have it with me.

How is everyone today ?
Sometimes it's obvious when to use an IRC such as when you are warned (occasionally) of mail theft at their end.
Sometimes it's a country where they don't want to get involved with GS because they aren't supposed to.
But what about the random guy who goes on a one man DXpedition ?
Does anyone use IRCs here ?
I keep several new current ones here for those other cases, but sometimes it's 8 at night and you have a bunch of 5s in your wallet and want to get the envelope out of your way.
Thanks for the input

I use IRCs now 75% of the time. When it comes down to 1 IRC or 2 GSs, I use
the IRC. When it comes down to 1 IRC or 1 GS, I'll decide based upon the
country's preferences and if my current supply was obtained cheaply. If it
comes down to 2 GS or 2 IRCs, I will usually go for 2 GS.
Given the fluctuations of the dollar and its ever weakening position, I find
more comfort in IRCs. Of course, with the Dec. 31 expiry date on the
current batch, it may be a more difficult decision in September or October.

Unless it's a country which does not accept IRC's (few and far between), or it's an operator (or QSL Manager) which declines to accept IRC's, you should always be able to send one. In many cases, with the currency fluctuations, a single IRC might net the DX station that air mail stamp or equivalent, when US$1 (or even US$2) might not be enough.
Of course, you can always run down to the corner over priced convenience store and break that $5, they usually have SOMETHING under a buck. If you have one in your area that's open late or overnight, that is (ditto a late night or 24 hour drug store or supermarket)

i see a lot of tu2ci cards being received lately. my first question is what
size is it (the 'regular' american size or large european size)? 3 tries
with regular nested envelopes - received nothing. figured i try white ones.

It reached the stage today when I find this question impossible to
answer. <smile>
Airmail to the US of A is now 50p [Thanks to those who noticed]. Sure 1
IRC covers that, however I exchanged a wad of GS today and got 49 pence
each - last week it was 51p, so am more than grateful to those who
enclose $2 [or more].
I am actually at the stage where I will have to consider using Surface
Mail to return some cards, before my accountant [ 'er downstairs ] tells
me we can't afford to get any more cards printed, and stay within
'budget'. Postage from Bulgaria [ Where all mine are printed ] to the
UK has just increased by 200 % [yes that's right - two hundred !], so
those costs have gone up.
Oh well, I will survive and try to keep the service on song.
73 and happy collecting
Graham M5AAV [who hates those people who 'cleverly' stick [rather than
leave loose] UK stamps on an envelope - the record so far being 2 pounds
worth - just a bit over for 10 grams <smile>]

Remember all IRCs expiore on 31 December this year so please do not send
them to a QSL manager
during December otherwise he may not be able to exchange them before the
deadline. I figure that $1 or $2
to be a much better bet...

I'm curious to know if the post office will redeem old-for-new
(doubtful, but you never know until the new ones are out and your ask).
I use mint stamps for the most part and have pretty good luck. I
would say I have much better response with mint stamps than with G$
or IRCs, although I do use all three methods.

As of today (mid-May) I wouldn't be too worried -- YET -- about using existing IRC's.
Now, if you're sending off a request NOW to a big expedition, who are going to take a few months to get QSL cards printed & processed, then there is some concern. In these situations, it behooves said expedition's QSL manager to immediately exchange IRC's, or immediately sell them off for cash, or whatever.
As the rest of the year flashes by, this will become a bigger and bigger concern. I'd conservatively say that after September, existing IRC's should be exchanged and not sent to managers, unless they're known for fast turn-arounds. By November, I wouldn't even do that.
Of course, that's also assuming that the situation doesn't change and that the new IRC's for the next half decade are available starting the middle of this year. The UPU could also decree that the expiration date has been extended... which opens up several new balls of wax, so let's not go there.
YMMV, VWPBL(STn!)

6W6JX via F6FNU?? I just emailed my friend Jean-Louis 6W6JX to find out if he were still via F6FNU. He replied saying that he hasn't sent a log to F6FNU since 1991...Your QSO was prior to 1991? Just curious...

YK1BA by N5FF (as it were) for a new one

i'm assuming that any manager worth his (her) salt is aware of the irc
expiration situation and will take steps so as not to get stuck with expired
paper. i also hope the said managers will also stop their resale of expiring ircs
at a reasonable date so their buyers will have time for them to be resent
and redeemed. i know, caveat emptor and all that, but...
i am setting a September 1 date for myself for buying the resold-expiring
ones and am only buying small quantities. and as the year-end approaches, will
either be using the projected new versions or green stamps.
i guess the ipu has decided to cut down on the amount of this defacto
international currency floating around.
too bad they just can't come up with a
useable-in-all-countries/reply-to-all-countries airmail reply stamp. oh, yeah. that's what an irc is SUPPOSED
to be!! (NOTE: MAJOR SARCASM HERE).
