Fellow DXers:

The Foreign Ministry of Mongolia is apparently in the midst of creating
an "official" spelling for the capital with Ulaanbaatar as the
preferred spelling.

This information was taken from a news researcher's list I belong to,
which relayed a message from a National Public Radio correspondent in
Ulaanbaatar, who had been asked by the Mongolian Foreign Ministry to
relay the information to Western journalists.

When most Western journalists report from or about Mongolia, the
majority apparently list the capital as "Ulan Bator."
That is actually an older spelling that is now unfamiliar to Mongolians,
according to the NPR correspondent. The government preference is
"Ulaanbaatar" -- all one word. Apparently the news media has a mixed
bag of spellings as reporters spell it Ulan Batar, Ulan Bator, and
Ulaanbaatar.

The Foreign Ministry said it is preparing a news release to be sent to
all major worldwide news agencies who regularly report from Mongolia
concerning the "correct" spelling of "Ulaanbaatar."
