I just took a look at the 2004 yearbook and decided I would do a bit of
research. 1522 calls are listed with at least 1000 mode/band confirmations,
which is the minimum needed for the award. Thirteen hams are listed at the
top of the DXCC Challenge standings, with totals of 3000 or more mode/band
confirmations. Six of these are DX operators, and 7 are US stations. Of
these top 13, I have worked 1 DX station and 5 stateside. Out of the 6
stations, only 1 stateside has confirmed via LOTW.
Now here are 7 of the top DXers in the world, and only ONE of them is in the
LOTW SYSTEM. I am sure all of them have thousands and thousand of logbook
entries, and most if not all started with written logbooks, as did I and
probably most of you. I would hope that all are now using electronic logs
and new contacts are showing in there, and possibly some of them are now in
LOTW but dont have their old logs converted over yet.
My electronic logs now go back 21 years, since my moving to this location,
and I had to go back and manually enter about 12 years of those into the
computer. Right now I am at 21,526 QSOs and have probably missed some that
were on paper during contests. I would hope that the majority of the people
1522 people on this list eventually do get on LOTW, but hmmmmmm - these are
the ones who apparently are good QSLers anyway - or they wouldnt have the
cards to do so.
It would be interesting to go thru the whole DXCC Challenge list, and see
how the rest of them do as far as LOTW, but thats a lot of work and I am not
typing in over 1500 calls just to find out. It appears, from just a quck
eyeball scan, that the percentages, DX to Stateside, are about 50/50, so if
those 761 DX stations were all on LOTW, we should be able to fill in a lot
of mode/band confirmations, without the huge expense. Of course, many, like
me, are setting here with enough cards/contacts to get on the list, and just
havent got all the cards sent in yet. With my 2057 I could be number 288 on
the list, unless of course you all send yours in and put me futher down the
line. HI
What does all this mean? Well, mostly its just me trying to encourage
everyone to climb on board. If your reading this, it means you have access
to a computer, your are a DXer, and would save money . After all, its free
to post logs, and no ARRL membership is required. Do your buddy a favor,
LOTW em.
