I suspect that some may not even have printed cards, but not 50%.  

I was also licensed in 1952 and in those days a postcard could be sent
for one cent (times have really changed), so SASEs weren't such a big
deal.  The ARRL outgoing bureau was free for members at that time.  A
lot of the early cards I received were hand-drawn or even mimeographed
(remember that?)
