Hi guys,
=
Just a couple lines in rememberance of Danny. For those of you who were n=
ot
licensed until after Danny's DXPeditions, you really missed something. I =
was
WA5AYM in those days, first licensed in 1960. My first job out of high
school was with a geophysical company located in Belaire, Texas, in the
Houston area. I was a QC tech on the transformer line for this company. O=
ne
night they asked me if I'd like to work some overtime. I said yes. This w=
as
the first real job I had ever had and my very first time at overtime. I
continued to check transformers at my desk, thinking that was what they
wanted me to do. Someone came in and said no, what they really wanted me =
to
do was to help the maintenance man set up some tables and chairs in a
certain conference room. I went to find him and was ushered into his offi=
ce
and offered a coke, which I accepted. As I drank it I walked around his
office looking at the several pictures on his walls. At one point my mout=
h
dropped open and I came to a sailing ship with a little sign on it that s=
aid
YASME (it may have been YASME II, I can't remember now). I turned to him =
and
said Hey, I know a guy who has a boat with the same name!!! He asked who=
that might be. I said its a guy named Danny Weil who I have talked to all=
over the world on ham radio. He asked me what was my callsign and name. I=
answered and he turned to me with a big smile and said "Pleased to meet y=
ou,
I'm Danny Weil". I was 18 then, 57 now. A few weeks later I joined the Na=
vy
and I never saw Danny again but that experience will be with me for the r=
est
of my life. I read and reread all of Danny's adventures I believe it was =
in
CQ magazine but it may have been 73. I just wonder if anybody still has
those articles. I'd sure love to read them again. Very best of 73, Jay W5=
