 Hi Tony--

 Ecuador does have an Antarctic station in the South Shetlands, called "Pedro 
Vicente Maldonado".  Perhaps that is the "Antarctic island" that you mention?

 I don't have any other info, sorry.  Hopefully this will get you going in 
the right direction.
