Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my query.  In summary, good 
news: Bill Plum is alive and well, and still very much in business.

So, I tried calling him again yesterday and this time had no trouble 
getting through. On my previous attempts perhaps he was simply not near his 
phone or computer ... or maybe a problem with his phone line.

In any case, Bill was his usual obliging self and happily took my order.

Problem solved.
