Tom;
I am a ham and as well a very active SWL'er. It is
unfortunate that some SWL'ers may have resorted to
sending a card on a chance of getting a response for a
non-existant QSO. I'm sure there are also Hams that
have tried to fill in the blanks for the DXCC this
way.
As a SWL'er, I work on several awards that are
available to SWL'ers and to the greater extent, so do
several other SWL'ers. In fact, I am the moderator of
a group on Yahoogroups called SWARL. (Short Wave
Amateur Radio Listeners) We have about 120 members
and posts around 80-100 per month. All welcome to
join. Also the web site at www.members.shaw.ca/SWARL
The awards I work on have endorsements for band, mode,
etc. so I may QSL a station more than once if the
Band, mode is different. Generally, I will not send
more than 1 card for the same band, mode, etc. unless
there was something very different regarding
propagation or content.
You will now find the newest mode of QSLing by SWL'ers
is eQSL service. Not recognized for ARRL awards, but
ARRL does not value SWL'ers for their awards anyways.
As a ham, I have received several SWL eQSL's and
quickly respond via same. No cost associated and
quick.
This topic of QSL'ing hams has come up on the SWARL
reflector and there is currently a lot of discussion
happening. So, any input from the Ham community would
be most welcome.
Regarding the value of SWL cards you receive, from
our group, so far this year, 5 new hams have budded
out from the help and encouragement provided from the
SWL Hams on the reflector. (Cyber Elmers)
I am going to let the SWL'ers know of this thread on
the DX-QSL reflector so they too can follow,
contribute and learn.
Thanks Tom for starting the discussion, we all need to
reflect and somewhat standardize what is required for
a report from a SWL'er.
Regards,
Steve Carter
