Hi Tim,

The "time out" is an indication that the program was not 
able to use the serial port.

I don't know of a work around, but maybe some one else has 
solved this. If you have a fast machine, it might work with 
a DOS emulator. The serial port doesn't run all that fast, 
(9600) and it seems there must be a way around this. I 
haven't looked at this for a while, but there were some game 
oriented applications that allow old DOS games to run under 
MS windows. I was not successful in making this work. Maybe 
some one else can help.

Anyway, windows doesn't want the application (UHFA.EXE) to 
have direct control of the serial port(s).

The easiest is to find a copy of DOS, and boot to the 
prompt. You might need to make an autoexec.bat or something 
to do some housekeeping if the machine is depending on 
windows for its "Plug and Play" functions.
