Some of you had trouble executing the java .jar file. I'll try not to
let this get into a MS rampage, but I find this rather unbelievable....
So I get a bunch of emails saying, "I downloaded your zip file, but I
don't see any jar". I didn't know what to make of this until Rick,
VE3CVG pointed this out.
The file I put on the website is called "dsp10controller.jar" NOT
"dsp10controller.zip". If you download it with IE however, it renames
the file with the .zip extension! There's no way around it as far as I
can tell. Even if you rename it on once it is downloaded to your local
machine something has become corrupted such that it cannot execute with
the JRE. Yes, I know that a .jar file is really a .zip file with an
embedded manifest file that points the JRE where to start to the
program, so it's really not all that different. Unfortunately, whatever
IE does to it munges that information enough to make it unusable. The
only possible reason for this behavior that I can think of is that maybe
renaming the file to .zip makes it more likely that the user's virus
scanner will look at it for possible viruses (most don't know to look at
.jar, .gz, .arj and other compressed formats). The fact that IE gives
you no warning whatsoever that it is making this alteration confounds me.
In the meantime, try downloading with a different browser, or if you
have none, I will happily send you the jar by email....I don't know if
Outlook will do the same thing to it though. You do need the latest
version of java--1.4.2 won't execute it right now. I'll probably make
it backward compatible at a later date.
Thanks for the feedback so far!
