Thank you for the information.

I tried lowering the cap to 7pF and found that I could get my unit to
lock over the full 144-148 MHz tuning range with the slug in the coil. 

My unit covers 144-148 MHz with the slug removed. If I have a problem in
the future I will take your advise to increase the value of the capacitor
that is in series with the varactors to increase the tuning range.
