Bob,
Thanks for the reply and your description of Peter's PIC-A-STAR - I
should have realized that most readers of my email wouldn't have seen
the RSGB magazine articles. Also thanks to everyone who replied direct
with offers of a surplus EZ-Kit.
I have a mind to go with Peter's approach. The method of attaching
devices to the PCB is certainly novel, but appeals to me - and the low
cost is attractive. If I can make it work, the technique opens the
possibility of experimenting with other interesting AD devices - the
ADSP-21535P (not yet available) with on-board USB would enable a
completely PC controlled radio (no microphone socket or speaker).
I'm at an early stage (no hardware built) and have yet to embark on the
DSP learning curve. So, the plan is to first build a PIC-A-STAR IF to
get experience and take it from there. I understand that TAPR are
producing a 2nd run of kits but they are somewhat oversubscribed. I've
emailed N7HPR to ask about availability, a PCB from W7SLB is an alternative.
I'll post news on any progress to the reflector.
