Not sure why this is addressed to wa1mba reflector... hope you catch it here,
'cause I'm not cross posting.

There are  quite a few operations taking place in the ADSP-2181. It is doing IF
conversion to audio, including programmable audio filters in "real time" as well
as the data collection for the waterfall display and a few other functions.

The DSP chips are pretty well optimized with registers and instruction sets to
handle math instructions in a few ( often a single ) clock cycle. There might
very well be some way to do this with logic arrays, however to achieve the same
performance would be difficult and not cost effective.
