Message-ID: <90.26aa02f3.2a2a4fd8@aol.com> Hi folks.... long time ago I have been talking about the availability of surplus OCXOs over here in Germany and Europe to gain the needed stability for the DSP-10 project. There are none on the surplus market over here, and if, they are very expensive. This situation brought us up to start the development of an new, affordable OCXO in the low-price range but with all the possibilities and specifications of the "high-society" high-priced units. Since more then 6 weeks Walter and I have been working hard (outside our normal daylight duty) to find an solution who is able to compete with the specs of the OCXOs found on the market. Now we have finished the design and have been building the first units. Lots of problems needed to be solved. One of the biggest problem was the design of the heater. It was a nightmare, but after all we are able to keep the temperature variation of the osc. cavity below 0,06 degrees Celsius during an day-night cycle due to a special oven-cavity and regulation circuit. The unit is also voltage controllable to be steered by a GPS RX and his interface-board, like the one from Brooks Shera, W5OJM. Its over now and final tests have begun. The results so far are satisfy our goals. For those who like to see more, take a look on our European-DSP-10 website under the button New OCXO maintained by DC8SW and DC9UP. To try all this out a few months ago, I got Disk1 and Disk2 off the FTP site and was successful in installing them on a laptop. A few minutes ago I looked at Disk2 that I had literally moved to a floppy and noted that I had added a note file that said: "For the install to work correctly, the "Disk 2" files need to be located in the path A:\21xx\ezkitl\2181\ This needs to be created, most easily right on the floppy such as is here. ============================================================================ == Basically, if you place the disk 2 files at the above path on the A: drive it works fine -- the install program expects them to be there and no other path is acceptable. Assembly went smoothly as I followed the expanded testing notes from W7CQ and KO7N. Those notes saved me a lot of time because I did have the DAC Left and DAC Right lines reversed. I only have a couple of comments of my own to add regarding the assembly process. Concerning the 10 MHz oscillator, I warped this onto frequency by adding a 27 pF mono ceramic cap to pins 2 and 3 of J106. I did this by simply crimping the cap into Molex terminals, along with the jumper that goes between pins 1 and 2. I did this because I was working at home during the final assembly, and I could not "borrow" any chip caps from my employer. This seems to be a satisfactory solution until I can build an accurate 10 MHz reference. The measured drift using this method was about 24 Hz in 6 hours. I think that the alignment of L8 through L13 is easier to do by tuning for maximum power out during transmit. It seemed easier to me to peak my rf probe than to dip for a quiet signal. I checked my DSP-10 at work on a Motorola service monitor, and it seems to work as advertised. Signals that are -152 dBm are easily seen 10 dB above the noise. 20 dB quieting is at better than .3 uV. And power out was 29 mW measured with an HP 8481H Power Sensor on an HP 435B Power Meter. Adjacent channel selectivity for FM (30 kHz spacing) was so good that it was off the scale. I am still plagued by the 5 kHz birdies, though. Thanks to W7PUA and TAPR. 73, Jim Albers N9CYL ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! AD's PCB layout folks are using "the square hole is pin 1 rule" for numbering the 0.1 inch connectors (well, at least on my EZ-Lite Eval board.) 73's and cul dave garnier - wb9own W4mvb@cs.com wrote: > Hi Mike, > > Thanks for the info.
