I found the email from John Kriner.  Following is the relevant sentence:

*Interesting about leaving the radio plugged in to AC mains.  The 
resident expert who was at Drake always recommended leaving them 
powered.  He said the constant temperature was much better on the 
trimmer capacitors.*
