The vast majority of LEDs are not designed nor intended to have AC voltage applied to them. In fact, doing so can destroy the LEDs as their reverse breakdown voltages are not very high. In light of that fact some manufacturers include a reverse connected red LED in parallel with the main LED which acts as a 2.2 Volt clamp. When I ran the LED lighting program for my former employer I had some customers call complaining that their LEDs were emitting red light instead of white. Why? They installed them backwards. That said you may get away with very low AC voltages but I wouldn't bank on it.
