[Drake] Better Antenna Connector on Drake R-4B Receiver

Hello Dan.........ANY of the common 50 to 75 ohm coax cable varieties will
work just fine as an antenna path for the R-4 receivers. If the
frequencies involved were 144 or 432 MHz then maybe the selection would maybe save
a tenth of a dB or less, but here, we're talking 1.8 - 30 MHz, and I doubt
there would be a hundredth of a dB difference (certainly not noticeable),
no matter what type of coax were used to run an antenna patch
cable........ditto on the connectors........phono connectors work just fine. I usually
use RG-58A for these applications, simply because it's so common, cheap,
and easy to find in hamfest junkboxes, and it's easier to connect to phono
plugs (for me, anyway). If U will be moving cables around a lot (plugging
and unplugging on the workbench), RG-58A (I much prefer stranded inner
conductor to solid) will last a lot longer than the much smaller RG-174. Try
to find some decent quality phono connectors.......these days, at hamfests,
there are all types of dirt-cheap phono connectors.........some even use
low temperature plastic internal insulation material that holds the center
pin.........and it promptly melts when a soldering iron is applied to the pin
or shield, making a mess. The older, US-made ones (I like Switchcraft
the best) are vastly superior, but they are getting harder to find. I'd
MUCH rather find a used Switchcraft plug in the junkbox, take the time to
unsolder the old coax from it and then clean it, and then recycle it instead of
use one of the new Chinese plugs that are everywhere. Once U finish
installing the plug, take the time to clean the solder pin (I like to use a
wire brush and some alcohol), to remove the flux. Good luck.

Any thoughts about the cable used as the receive antenna connecting cable
between the transmitter and receiver? The cable I have between the R-4B
and
the T-4XB is a length of RG6 which is maybe three feet long at most. I
know
that cable is 75 ohm and I'm wondering if there is any reason to bother
replacing it with 50 ohm cable. As short as the run is, it seems hardly
and
issue but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts suggesting otherwise.
Also running the same cable for the Injection line between the two.
Thoughts on that cable?

I went through this many years ago when questioning these connectors and
their use with Collins equipment.
As I recall, they are an even BETTER impedance match than the SO239
connector, and I also remember it suggested to me to NOT use the audio-type
RCA connector.
Their is another
which is designed for RF use.
I got these, and use them with all my gear. Same idea, but the center tip
is
longer than the standard audio RCA connector.

always use a small SS wire brush on the female socket and use a tiny bit of
"no-alox" on the outside. It has always been my belief that it's the
'petals' not the center conductor that causes problems.
