Not to get too far off topic, but I have to share a story from my past that 
 I was reminded of while pondering Dave's issue and how to troubleshoot it.

Years ago I had an early Simpson DVM that I was quite proud of.  I  needed 
to calculate the current in an amp to troubleshoot a similar problem as  
Dave's.  So, being a smart guy I'd calculate the current by measuring  the 
voltage across one of the small series resistors in the amp.  All was  fine 
until that resistor opened up and the full 3KV when through the DVM.   It blew 
open the DVM's case apart and started it on fire.  
 
In hind sight, I should have kept the DVM remains and labeled it, "Do not  
try this at home."
