[Drake] 2NT with a VFO??

Anyone using a Drake 2NT with a VFO?

I may fool with straight key night for a short while this year, and will probably pull out the bucket of crystals. 

I have had my 2NT connected to a Globe VFO, a Hallicrafters, a Lafayette, and an HG10B.

All of them either chirp or drift.

Perhaps they all need new caps, but that would kinda surprise me. I had the same bad luck hooking 'em up to 

an Eico 723 transmitter. 

Does anyone have this combo working?  All I have is a piece of coax going from the VFO out of the VFO to the crystal plug 

of the transmitter. Do I need to use a certain type of coax...or key the VFO some way...or something??

Just wonder if I'm missing something obvious.
