[Drake] paint

Hi Paul (and others)...
I have a large Drake collection and have refurbed a LOT of others. Some
of the very early Drakes did not have textured paint. At least from my
experience. There is a company in Ohio, Hartsfield (??) that did
Drake's painting. A couple of years back, they would still re spray the
Drake covers. This would only be needed if the cover was damaged and
the original 'texture' was damaged.
If you just want a fresh coat of paint, yes, Krylon is a perfect match.
You should know that recently, Krylon had 'modernized' most of their
spray cans.
The old "Semi-Gloss", is now called "Satin". Most importantly, the cans
now have a "Fan Spray Nozzle!!" This is the best invention since beer!
The new cans can be identified by the shape. Instead of the normal
cylindrical cap, the new caps are curved (tapered). They make the new
cans look like a large 'bullet'. They also have serrations that make
the cap MUCH easier to remove!!!
I have mastered (??) a technique to duplicate the 'texture' of the
Drake paint, but it is so difficult and time consuming, I wait 'till I
have a BUNCH of covers to do, before I break out the spray gun.
More info and pix available on request.
Have FUN!!

Subject: [Drake] paint
Hello all
=0
AI am new to the list but have been a user of Drake since I had a 1A in
the 60's
After a long absence from the bands I have dusted off the R4 and T4X,
strung an antenna, returned to the bands, and have acquired a few other
Drake pieces to refurbish.
My question(s) tonight relate to cabinet paint finishes. The items I
currently have are "all over the map" for standardization and I am
asking if there is some definitive standard for color and texture on
the Drake line.
As I recall my 1A it was somewhat of a gloss black but maybe I waxed it
to much.
The 2B's and speakers I have from that era are a semi flat black. I
have read Krylon 1613 semi flat black is the exact finish color and
texture and appears that would indeed match the ones I have.
My R4 is more of a gloss finish (again with the wax?) while the T4X is
back to semi gloss or semi flat.
The TR3 Project transceiver is semi flat
The AC4 and MN2000 are a semi flat with a hint of spatter
In the restoration process I am trying to be as accurate as reasonably
possible but from what I am seeing I wonder if there was a standard?
