Bob,
Got the extender kit,and like it.  I finally took the plunge and pulled the boards, deoxited them, re-installed, etc.  Deoxited all the band switch wafers and jack contacts, as well as the external freq. counter switch.  Everything went without a hitch, and after re-setting the six voltage reg. board pots, the receiver and transmitter behave very fine.  Even my intermittent freq. readout is rock-stable now.  The audio problem has not come back either.  I am about to do a full alignment before I button it back up.  Then, I will docment all the stuff I did to it for future reference.  
To the Drake List:
Thanks for all of your emails about my audio problem.  Resetting the boards is not a 10-minute job, but WELL worth it, as everyone has stressed over the years.  

As you said in the documentation with your extender boards...."hope you never have to use them".  I hope so too, and just having them is some relatively cheap isurance.
