Guillermo -

If the original paint is intact, just scuffed or faded, a light sanding
with very fine sandpaper will help the new paint adhere to the old. The
main thing is it MUST be _CLEAN_ . This means washed good with dish
soap and warm water, dried, and then wiped down with a solvent
appropriate for the paint. Paint thinner, mineral spirits, etc.
Alcohol can be used, but MUST be 97% alcohol or better, NOT "rubbing
alcohol" which has Lanolin in it.

If there are scratches or chips they must be sanded smooth or they will
show right through new paint, no matter how many coats you put on! My
son has a sand blasting cabinet with walnut shells in it that takes the
finish down to bare metal for the bad ones.
