Chris,
Do a search for "Drake 2-LF". It was a converter which plugged in the
crystal calibrator socket and converted 0.1 to 3.5 MHz to the 10M
range. If you get a schematic, you can probably duplicate it.
The other approach you mentioned involved adding a crystal for the
160M range and necessitated modifying the preselector to cover 160 M.
