That's a question that's not asked nearly often enough.

Can you hear the difference between your antenna and a 50 ohm resistor? 
If yes, you don't need to touch anything!

On a 30' long wire, I've yet to find a signal on any band below 10m 
where adding a 10dB attenuator takes it from readable to unreadable (on 
my R4C or TS830). On many rigs, it will make things better.
