I'll take my chances at a guess.

First thing I would look at is the resistor across the plate parasitic
choke. There might have been a short VHF parasitic that blew the resistor
and "let the smoke out" which could smell a little like burnt
bakelite.Another not very nice possibility is one of the ac  switches is
giving up and momentarily opened , dropping the B+ and making the relay sing
for a second.

All this is based on L7 thoughts but they are very similar .
