They were ALL black painted metal from the factory at first.  The paint 
wears off the spinner button, and some have cleaned ALL the paint off.   
Later knob buttons were plastic rather than metal and so stayed black!

By the way, the knob for the TR-7 LOOKS identical, but it isn't.  The 
TR-7 knob is "thinner", and may not be able to compress the rubber 
sleeve enough to drive the dial on the 4 Line.

A possible source is Charlie, K3ICH.  He sells the spun aluminum inserts 
and advertises on Ebay and other places.
